New hard-drive. Moving anime!
« on: October 16, 2009, 04:36:36 PM »
SO yeah I filled up my internal hard drive in 90% with anime. Other 10% is just windows etc. SO i went to buy a new hard drive. I bought an external 1TB hard drive jsut now. However all my anime I am still seeding is still in my internal drive. Is there a way to move it onto my external disc so that uTorrent client still seeds them but from new place? I would like to avoid redownloading .torrent files if possible.

Another thing I would like to ask is if it's possible that when my external hard drive isn't connected for any reason at the time (I would like to begin downloading straight onto it and will keep it on at all times when downloading/seeding) that uTorrent client automatically starts downloading the file onto a place in my internal hard drive? Like 'Alternative Directory' option I guess.

Thanks!

torrenting from an external is a not so wise move, you know that, right?
the easiest way would be to reload the torrent file either from the site or from your utorrent settings directory.

doubt that automatic switch is possible with utorrent alone, but at least in my client he asks me where i want to save the torrent - just change the drive letter there :P it's not like you are downloading hundreds of torrents a day.

Just stop torrents and change the download location (relocate the files)
Re-check once finished - that is all

And yes seeding/downloading on an external is not wise, you will definitely shorten it's life-span...

is that possible in utorrent? last time i checked relocate was individual file based.

yes. after you've moved the files over

file > add torrent (no default save)

then select the drive/folder where the files are located. It will do a check and then seed/download from where it was when you stopped it.

you are saying yes, and after that explain a way of reloading the .torrent file (which is not what i was asking)...
anyway i found the option (dunno how i missed that one): rightclick on the torrent, advanced, set download location, force-recheck

Yeah I know its not wise but its unavoidable for me if I want to seed something. I will be paying for seedbox realyl soon though. I guess I will stop seeding those animes I have now and just seed those I will download straight onto my internal drive so I will not use external for seeding and download at all it seems. Thanks.

I would really like to see some technical evidence on that... Well, I mean, of course it will shorten the lifespan if you read/write from the disc all the time, but that would be the case for an internal drive too, yes?

Actually, most external drives are just an internal one in some container and a special gate between itself and the computer (yes, I know the last mentioned item can be a source to problems, especially if its USB)... So why all this fuss about external/internal drives? I would like to know how MUCH is the difference, instead of all that crapp yapping "ladida, don't use external drives".

Anyone care to enlighten me?

the main problem is not with the drive or the connection (those are most of the time similar to what you have as internals - you could have bad luck though) but with the casing. they are simply not build to dissipate the heat produced by a continuously running drive. some cases are doing it better than others, but especially the cheap and small ones are horrible when it comes to heat dissipation.

That's why most good cases come with ventilation (fans? if you want to pay MORE...) and have a lower power comsumption HDD in there for lower temps and noise and transfer rate/RAT/etc though you won't notice that over USB.

Personally i'd go for a standard 7200RPM drive and just shove it in the case, same price. Or have a 5.25" to 3.5" HDD internal rack installed where one of the DVD drives goes. Easy.

Here some tips might help you:
If you want to move your seeding files to another drive and keep seeding without doing the boredom recheck, here is a simple way since you use utorrent.
- First close utorrent.
- Make sure your target drive will have the same directory structure as your source drive ( Example:Move d:\naruto to f:\naruto), this is just to make it simple for you later.
- Now with any hex editor(i suggest HxD) open (c:\Documents and Settings\[login name]\Application Data\uTorrent\resume.dat)
- From search menu choose replace and edit the drive letter you changed (in the example above replace d:\naruto with e:\naruto).
-run utorrent again and now you can directly continue seeding with the new source.
- If you want to seed from external drive make sure to backup resume.dat periodically in case you run utorrent without plugging the external drive just to avoid the recheck.

Yeah, and you WILL pay for the extra electricity when having a desktop seeding 24/7 instead of my li'l eeepc 901 consuming 12 watts, + the external taking 8 watts - 20 watts altogether

My gigantic towercased überspecc'ed desktop consumes 400 watts when idle, go make the math ;p

In a three month period, it would be CHEAPER for me to buy a new external harddrive, than just using my 4 already inserted 1,5 terabyte raid disks (yes, 6 tera's in all) in my monster computer!

Yes, well, you're not supposed to use a high-powered system like that as an always-on server.  Besides, electricity and hardware costs differ from place to place, and not every desktop is a gaming machine.

Exactly my point :D

So therefore I use my netbook laptop together with an external hard drive all of it consuming 20 watts 24/7 :p

If heat is the issue, I will go and spend some more serious cash on a drive with better cooling facilities ^^

it depends on what you want. the better drive is the WD Black (the drives build into the My Book Essential series are WD Greens), but if you want a external drive the My Book Series is imo a solid choice.

as i said, it depends on what you want to use it for. greens(5400 rpm - most get that number wrong, but greens actually do run at that speed) are considerably slower than blacks. that has its benefits too, they are quieter, take less power and are cheaper.
the speed won't really matter if you are using the drive only to archive files and access one of them every few hours - in that case a 1.5tb green you can get for the price of a 1tb black would definitely be the way to go.
