New computer cant access website at all
« on: October 26, 2009, 05:29:29 PM »
I've tried reading the FAQ and the only info i could get was "server might be down" which isnt the case. I've also tried a search the forums and couldnt find a similar problem.

Maybe i'm not searching hard enough, i do apologize in advance.

Now i've been visiting the website since it was called Boxtorrents. Never had any problems. 2 weeks ago i couldnt access the website anymore.So i just thought it was down. Day after day still couldnt access. Now surely bakabt couldnt be at fault, it must be something on my end. I turned on my old PC which i dont use for browsing the internet anymore and look at this!! I'm here on my old PC!!!.

So, my first instinct was to go to my new PC and replicate every kind of security function that my old PC has. didnt do anything. My new PC has windows 7 and Firefox 3.0.14

My old PC has windows 6. But that shouldnt be a problem, my sister's PC is running Windows 7 as well. And again, i went and replicated the security features. I turned off my firewall and anti-virus, still not helping. I dont think it could be my router because all the computers are running on it and my new computer is the only one that can't access the site. And then i relized something. It wasnt just Bakabt i couldnt access, i also cant go to like 20% of my favorites on my new comp. but i can certainly go to them on my old comp.

I'm totally stumped. Obviously it must have something to do with my new computer but even if i try to turn off every security feature available, i still cant go anywhere.

So, help a guy out?

Just a guess, but are you sure your new computer is configured to use the same dns provider?

For xp, easy instructions are here;
https://store.opendns.com/setup/device/windows-xp/
And for Vista;
https://store.opendns.com/setup/device/windows-vista/

The examples use OpenDNS nameservers, but you may use others too

Depending on the type of connection, you may or may not have a choice to change the nameserver (like when the isp uses transparent proxy) so this might not necessarily apply.

What's different between your computers? Different firewall, antivirus, software, etc?

hmm, well according to both computers, they are both on the same DNS setting. I have it on automatic.

Both are on Window's Firewall. Both are on XP proffessional OS system. and every computer in this house is on Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. My sis's laptop is on vista and even that one can access bakabt as well as the other websites i usually go to. I have a total of 4 computers in this house. and my new computer seems to not want to cooperate lol.

I guess i didnt say it to well in my first post. I tried over 3 different versions of IE as well as the latest version of Firefox. and for some reason my new computer cant get into bakabt but all the older computers can.

I mean, i suppose i could just use this computer to browse with, but that negates the reason of using the new computer in the first place.

My mum had the exact same problem with Facebook last time I was home. Every other machine could access it except her laptop. We tried various settings, flushing things out, re-installing browsers, installing new browsers. I was going mad trying to fix it for her. Then my dad took the laptop for 10 seconds and it just worked.

If you send me your address I'll send you my dad in a box so he can fix yours too. :)

How about just asking him? Would be a lot easier, both for Tetsamaru and your father's back. :D

should also note. My new computer can go on the internet. But certain websites dont let me connect. BakaBt being one of them. When every other computer and even my PSP and PS3 can connect.

Edit:meh, thanks to everyone that helped, in the end, i just did a restore point. i had to go back like 3 months in time. Can browse with ease now. though i still would like to know what exactly made my new computer not want to go to certain website. It has to be something in the settings. Maybe windows updates do something i dunno. every computer in my house never updates, so i just thought that might be it.

At first i thought maybe Bakabt was black-listed by my firewalls or anti-virus or even IE and Firefox. but even if i disable everything and make myself practically naked, i still couldnt access bakabt.

Restart your computer in 'Safe-Mode with Networking' then try again.

If that doesn't work then open a command prompt and type: 'tracert bakabt.me' then press enter.

You'll get some information back, hopefully a reply of some sort with 4 numbers. Let us know what you get.

Tetsamaru, my guess is some wierd software you have installed, but you seem pretty sure so I have no idea, good thing it's working now.

Lol, your dad could be quite handy as an IT-supporter, all he would need to do was touch and *poof!" it's working again! :D

I can understand why you're wondering when you've been at it for 2 hours or something and then your father comes along and does it on 2 minutes.

As I understand it, a recent auto-update from Microsoft has been a massive screw up (especially for XP users). My Firefox caught it and disabled it, but I had to completely uninstall my .NET framework to get my computer to enter standby mode again. It's only certain computers that it seems to be eating. It messed with my roommate's web browsing too until his firefox disabled it. I would blame Microsoft. They're responsible in one way or another :D

Sounds like a DNS misconfiguration or someone's been messing with your hosts file. Most likely the former.
