sooo i have this problem with the XP computer . . .whenever I double click on any hard drive instead of opening it it asks me what program to use to open that file .
I already tried the following:
-go to the "folder options" and change the drive default to open with windows xplorer
-fix registry
-use start/run/ regsvr32 /i shell32.dll
I tried using the command prompt but it started in C:/documents and settings/*****/
instead of just C:/
so whenever i tried to delete the autorun.ini files it didnt let me
I couldnt even find the autorun.ini files anywhere.
Im pretty sure they were corrupted and the antivirus (AVG) deleted them.
i tried defrag/disk check

xD Another victim of AV autoimmune syndrome.

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

Bookmark that site. It will prove valuable when the registry starts going haywire.

You'll probably just need the Folder Association Fix, but with antivirus going berserk who knows which other ones you'll need...

Also, autorun.ini isn't required in C:/ AFAIK... I've never seen it on any of the XP systems I've used, anyway. Unless C:/ is your optical drive :P

[edit] Oh duh... it just occurred to me that autorun.ini was probably put there by another app. Anything with 'auto' in it is usually avoided by most users, huh xD (c.f. autoexec.bat)

Try doing this:
1. Open the autorun.ini file. It should point you into the direction of the offending file.
2. Once you find the executable, try stopping all instances of the executable in the task manager.
3. Delete the autorun.ini file as well as the executable. You should be able to delete the executable if it isn't running.
4. Check msconfig as well as the Startup folder in the start menu for instances of the file being executed at startup.
If you've reached up to this point, the file won't copy itself again. Your shell extensions will still be fucked up though.
5. Open up regedit and go to this location: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mircosoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\MountPoints2. This folder lists all disks (USB/HDD) that were inserted into your computer.
6. Expand each entry and look for a an entry named "MUIVerb". This entry tells the operating system what it should execute when you double click on an drive icon. Delete that entry if you see the filename of the file you deleted earlier on it.
7. Reboot your computer

If you've done the above, your system should be back to normal.

If you're going to try this, BACKUP the registry.

There is a very high possibility that the executable file fucked up the hidden file settings--you can't view any hidden/system files even if you already changed the settings.

You probably got the problem when you inserted an infected drive. I suggest you (1) disable autorun completely, (2) press SHIFT key when you insert a USB drive--it stops autorun from running or (3) use the folder view of Explorer to view the contents of the drive. Click on the folder tree to view folder contents instead of double clicking on the icon of the drive.

o_O Don't run all the regfixes! Well, it shouldn't kill anything since all it does is restore system defaults, but it is still bad practice to run stuff before you know what it does, and even worse to run stuff when you know it won't work (but still do it anyway, 'on the off-chance that a miracle happens').

Like I said, all you need for now is probably the Folder Association Fix. If that doesn't work, then it's time to figure out something else.

I've got no time to answer more physics questions :P I'm barely keeping up with my own final-year project, and I still have to figure out how to generate a new grid for this simulation...

I have the solution.

Problem solved.
Windows 7 still uses the registry, no surprise since Vista did as well. That's hardly a solution; one might as well reformat XP.

I've never heard of a problem like this happening outside of XP, though, which was my point.

Windows 7 disabled autorun for non-read-only devices.

The problem isn't an autorun issue. It's a default application issue. The problem is this: the operating system doesn't use the shell.dll file to open drives but a new executable that replicates itself to other drives.

Try the solution I posted.

I tried the ones i told you, rebooted, nothing happened, i downloaded all of them and clicked on them, rebooted. . . nothing

as previously mentioned I went into tools/folder options/ file types > drives > advance > "create" {open using windows explorer.exe} set as default. close . apply.

nothing!

btw
what cha working on?

my final is a nice handy dandy multi stage coil gun that consists of coils with their respective capacitor banks and a couple of light sensors in between. . . .use your imagination for the rest ;D

Perhaps you should read what people post more carefully ::)
There is no autorun.ini. It's autoexec.bat. Deleting it will most likely screw something up.

Do a system repair.

I got the same  (or same kind of) issue with my xp. Some malware prog. It created autorun.inf & autorun.ini as hidden file to each HardDrive, and when ever I deleted it, it came back cause of the malware program was running as background program. I got the infection via my friends usb stick.

Solution regarding my issue: regedit.exe -> delete the malware files wich are starting with windows (needs identification). then physically delete all malware files (needs identification).

But the simplest way to do that all automatically and without thinking:

Avast Home edition (requires free registration)
Lavasoft Ad-Aware free edition
Trend Micros Hijackthis (free) & online analysator: http://hijackthis.de to finalize all.
