Australia: “Windows 7 Aids Pedophiles”
« on: October 29, 2009, 04:40:21 AM »
Here:
http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,26264238-3102,00.html

Sorry for double posting if this posted here before... And sorry if this is in the wrong category, but I feel like this one falls into the political category.

Okay, I mean WTF is wrong with the Australian government labelling all encryption technologies is meant to aid pedos? I mean this is just wrong, do they want another DDoS attack that happened not too long ago? Wow, they are really messing with the population here... And saying Windows 7 makes it easier for people to access encryption technologies, look at Windows 2000, it came with EFS which really nobody can crack as of now unless the user forgot to disable the DRA via Group Policy.

Reminds me of the guy here in the USA.   The police KNEW he had CP on his comp.

They were positive - someone saw it or something.

The guy encrypted his drive.

The court ordered him to unlock it - he refused.   So he had two options - go to jail for contempt ( which, imo - is unconstitutional - as he has the 5th amendment right against self incrimination ) or unlock the drive and go to jail for CP.

IIRC he didn't unlock the drive.

----

But really.   If it's a problem - get better.   They need to catch people smarter - use your damn head.   I mean, seriously - if I were in law enforcement I'd know EXACTLY how to catch someone like this.  Damn simple.

Nothing.

The notorious hacker Kevin Mitnick did the same thing, except not with CP. Encrypted all the data on his HD and sat in jail for years because he wouldn't unlock it.

Hahah, I remember a friend on a development site made a chat app with 128 bit blowfish encryption, a bunch of years ago, and was contacted by the USA goverment ordering him to remove it from the internet because of terrorists or somesuch.

If someone wants to encrypt their shit, they'll get stuff to encrypt it from somewhere. Pathetic blaming it on windows.
all i can think of when i hear that garbage is just pounding guys in the ass

I assume that they are talking about BitLocker. BitLocker is only available Ultimate. 99.9% of people will be running Home Premium because that's what will come on their computers. They're freaking out over nothing. It's not like full hard drive encryption didn't exist before now anyway.  ::)

Misinformation and also pointless lobbying from activists.
Some people really go to great lengths just to get their face on the front page of the local newspaper.
Not to mention the government down under don't trust the internet and only what they know from their misinformed advisors.

And what happened to a human's right for privacy?

And what happened to a human's right for privacy?

Australia, much like the UK, does not recognize the right to privacy.

Oh lawd! Fallacies galore!  :D

I find it amusing that they are complaining about the fact that data encryption does exactly what it's meant to do. To keep nosy people from looking at files the owner doesn't want them looking at.    ::)

Quote
Child safety advocate Hetty Johnson has called on Microsoft to rectify the problem.

And what are they gonna do about it? Oh, I'm sorry people aren't using this tech exactly how you want them to use it. This is like complaining to a company that makes ski masks because people use them to hide their face in a bank robbery...

Quote
"Microsoft has long been criticised for inadequate security – now it has implemented a robust security system that will bring problems along with its good," Dr McCullagh said.

So now your complaining it's too secure? ROFL!

Quote
Ms Johnson, a member of the Federal Government working committee on cyber safety, said she was stunned Microsoft would produce such software.

Why are you stunned? This isn't exactly new technology. Just because Microsoft puts this in their new OS (that only comes in the most expensive worthless edition anyway) doesn't mean there's going to be some sort of rise in pedophilia. They make it sound like they just found out about data encryption for the first time.

BTW, that article has loads of spelling mistakes. Someone needs to start using spell check. [/grammar-nazi]
