What HDD should I buy?

Basically you're telling the hard drive to ignore a large portion of the platter. Think of it like taking all of a pizza but the crust away. The heads have less ground to cover and as a result performance jumps significantly. Here's an article on it:

I recommend the WD-Green for data storage because of how impressed I have been with the drive design. Especially the power management.

I use it for all my externals, I never been able to push it into the dangerous temperature threshold. This is quite impressive considering that one of them is in a Vantec NextStar3 case (Which is terrible by-the-way since it doesn't transfer heat from the mounting bracket to the aluminum case very well). I use Acomdata Samba and Mediasonic Smartdrive enclosures for the rest, and they are fantastic for using the case as a heat-sink.

Just keep in mind that if you pick a more performance-oriented drive, then you have to worry about drive temperatures in externals. The WD-Green has the advantage for data storage.
