Last time you did Wipe-Install for your OS
« on: October 29, 2009, 10:37:43 PM »
For Windows XP Pro, had to do it every 6 months or less.

Vista Ultimate only one install and been running it since Feb. of 2008. Works like a charm and love it very, very much. So it's been about a year and 8 months since I did a wipe my partition and install a new OS and my other programs.

You?

I did it pretty much as frequently. I had to on my previous pc, on this one I did it just to avoid any potential problems. Last time was this past Sunday, but that was because I installed W7.

I usually wipe my xp once every year or so. it's around that time that it becomes spontaneously sluggish and buggy.

Yup, that's why. Besides the fact that it runs almost anything that wants to use something out of your system; hint hint, viruses, malwares, spywares and whatever other stuff they're called. Vista/Windows 7 secure that shit and won't allow it to run. Last time I actually scanned my computer was more than a year ago. I've prolly hit a lot of bad sites and had some bad programs running, but well .... Vista / 7 just own. With Windows XP Pro, I had to like find out what happened, get these programs running, waste more time and more time trying to remove them. Heh, no ... NO!

Vista self destructed on me about 9 months ago, so I reverted back to XP.
Befor this laptop, I had XP on my desktop for about 3 years.  It survived a massive short caused by miswiring, but died when a cotenant burned down the building.
I've never had to reinstall XP on any of my own computers for any reason outside of hardware failure or a complete rebuild.  Regular maintenance, using a separate partition for VM, and never downloading files to the OS partition work wonders for long term stability.

Only operating systems I've ever needed to do a wipe-install for were 98 and XP. I did one in 98 once a year, and in XP it was anywhere from 3-6 months between installs.

I never needed it with Vista, which I used for two (almost three) years with no problems.

If that's any indicator, I'm fairly confident that I'll never need to do it with Windows 7 either (at least not for a long time).

So anyway, if you're still running XP, it's definitely time to upgrade.

I've done it 4 or 5 times or so in the past 6 months (It's really annoying)

XP > XP > Vista > XP > 7

Hopefully all goes well with 7 ^_^

I've never had to wipe my XP install for performance reasons; if I did it it's usually on a whim (i.e. right after exams xD), and once it was to get rid of some spyware (I had already removed it with some worm removal tools, but I wanted to be absolutely sure it's wiped anyway). I have wiped quite a few XP installations (not mine) though, just because it was too much trouble to clean it back to optimised condition ;)

This XP installation has been running for 1.5 years, still runs great, and the only time I'll be doing another fresh restore is probably when I throw an SSD in it (I figured I might as well do a fresh install instead of moving the hard disk image, since it's pretty easy to set up from scratch again). I'll probably put W7 on my desktop once I can find a good price for it, right now I just don't feel like shelling out $199 for Home Premium.

Main OS HDD(160GB), never!
HDD(320GB) for OS dual boot or guest host, every 3 months or so.
Storage(640GB and growing), so far once.
I've got a nice sequence going, too bad they wont make 320GB platters anymore, or else I'll go with a four platter 1280GB HDD.

Only one of those were for something actually being wrong.

I hate Vista so much...

Back when I had my XP laptop I did it once after a year and that was because I had a stubborn virus and I was selling it.
My Vista laptop hasn't been done at all, but its not been used since Christmas except to download something.
My Mac got done a few weeks ago after about 10 months, but that was to do a clean install of Snow Leopard.

I don't tend to think about it... the computers I used before that however, ha ha, they REALLY need it. My parents are still using them too. They've not been defragged or anything in about 6 years

I've had XP running for over 2 years. I recently had to perform a re-installation, but that was due to a hardware refresh. I'll admit though, it was/is a development machine.

F-Secure was the cause of the only occasion where I almost lost Windows. It came with the system, and I made the mistake of thinking it would catch trivial malware. I had to manually remove the malware in the end, and you can bet the first thing I did after was to get rid of F-Secure. Even AVG sucks, I put that on a couple family computers and they still manage to break the systems somehow, and in short time. I'm working on my brother's computer... again. I'm just going to put Windows 7 and Comodo on it, we'll see how things work out this time. If anyone can break Windows 7, my brother can and will.

The moral being that XP is old and insecure, being aware of this and using the right countermeasures will prolong your install.

In the last..3? years of having my computer i had to wipe it many, many times. At least over 12...The reason being my computer was running vista with 6.24GHz (Well, 3.12GHz x 2 [not a duo]) CPU, and only 512 RAM...And so, be it that or be it it was doomed in the first place what with vista, My hard drive began getting CRC errors, i didn't know what the hell that meant, til my comp BSODed after..the 8th? wipe..It wouldn't read shit, it couldn't do shit. It was screwed..I fixed it sort of when i bought a second, 750GB (the first was 250GB) drive from newegg..After..Ahem ..Installing windows XP, Windows XP, Windows XP, i finally found a windows XP-64 bit, and now i use that..I've had to wipe it once or twice though, just because it never hurts to wipe once in a while, we don't want our hard drives to become like the shittler..Currently all my "broken" HD has is my 4.some gigs of photos..T.T

Windows XP Machine is wiped about once a year for performance reasons. My Mac is wiped each time I do a OS upgrade (18-24 months) as I will never do a upgrade install of OS X (way too many issues). I have never wiped my Linux Machine and its still running beautifully as a file and print server and torrent machine running Ubuntu 6.06LTS. I will have to wipe it soon as 6.06 is no longer updated, most likely early next year when the next LTS release comes out (10.04 I believe)
