I only wipe when I change hardware significantly, which seems to be between 3 and 9 months.  I have no stability problems, but it's easier when making massive changes to reinstall than to reconfigure, and I've got the Arch install down pat now.

Back when I lived with my parents (and thus, had a shared computer), I kept ME running for about 4 years without a wipe, and it had no more problems than ME normally did.

I haven't wiped my Gentoo Linux server since I installed it five years ago...  At most I copied the install from single disk to RAID array, and it behaves just as it did before the copy.

I hate disk wipes.  I like Gentoo because it's versionless, just keeping up to date means you have the latest install.  Granted some of the updates are harder to install, but at least no disk wipe needed to stay at latest.

Pardon my noobness, but why would u need to wipe-install your OS?
Wouldn't it be a pain to have to redo every single setting and redo your bookmarks and stuff.

Well, since your new to this stuff, we just need to do that to have a working OS. Tho' the new OS's work like a charm. Vista and 7 to be more specific and for Windows based systems. XP Pro has enough problems that made me wipe and re-install every god knows how many months.

I do it like every month or so, but only recently because I toggled between XP and Windows 7.

*Installs XP* Hmm, this is very nice, sees something about Windows 7 a month or so later.
*Installs Windows 7* This is also nice. But becomes tired of it because I'm not allowed to install much programs since it becomes too slow. I only have 1GB RAM. Mind you, this is my own rule. I'd rather live without some programs and have a fast laptop than the opposite. Same reason why I don't install demos, programs I don't know if I'll keep or many games.

Owe  ;/ I had 1GB on my desktop. It was okay until I did the big jump. Though I don't have much experience with desktops.

That's exactly why I don't like wipe installing...  However, some OS'es are sometimes impossible to repair/upgrade/update (namely, Microsoft's offerings).  With Gentoo I don't have that issue anymore, I did have to wipe install other flavors of Linux before to keep up to date (namely RH9 when I switched to Gentoo since RH stopped updating it).

Other people wipe Gentoo due to mistakes during installation or getting tired of all the manual work, but that's a different story...

I've been running XP on the desktop since at least 2004, and Vista on the laptop since I got it (2007). Cleaning registry and stuff once in a while works fine for me.

If I had a valid code available, I'd probably format them both. I am actually thinking about getting 7 from MSDN for the desktop as soon as possible, but am a bit lazy with it. As for the laptop, I don't think formatting it with the onboard function will do much good. It's one of those HP Recovery things, so I'm not supposed to delete that 'safe' partition. I don't see the big problem with just sending me a clean laptop and a valid Windows disk in the first place, but what can I do...

You have a valid key, most likely it's on the ram access cover.  Just download a clean install disc off mininova and use the license included with the laptop.  Microsoft doesn't give a damn about where you get the disc as long as you're installing it with a valid license.  Hell, they don't give a damn if you violate the license, just so long as you only use it for one PC at a time.
