Last time you did Wipe-Install for your OS
sdedalus83:
Vista self destructed on me about 9 months ago, so I reverted back to XP.
Befor this laptop, I had XP on my desktop for about 3 years. It survived a massive short caused by miswiring, but died when a cotenant burned down the building.
I've never had to reinstall XP on any of my own computers for any reason outside of hardware failure or a complete rebuild. Regular maintenance, using a separate partition for VM, and never downloading files to the OS partition work wonders for long term stability.
Drew:
Only operating systems I've ever needed to do a wipe-install for were 98 and XP. I did one in 98 once a year, and in XP it was anywhere from 3-6 months between installs.
I never needed it with Vista, which I used for two (almost three) years with no problems.
If that's any indicator, I'm fairly confident that I'll never need to do it with Windows 7 either (at least not for a long time).
So anyway, if you're still running XP, it's definitely time to upgrade.
shabutie:
I've done it 4 or 5 times or so in the past 6 months (It's really annoying)
XP > XP > Vista > XP > 7
Hopefully all goes well with 7 ^_^

If 7 fails, then its your hardware.

I've never had to wipe my XP install for performance reasons; if I did it it's usually on a whim (i.e. right after exams xD), and once it was to get rid of some spyware (I had already removed it with some worm removal tools, but I wanted to be absolutely sure it's wiped anyway). I have wiped quite a few XP installations (not mine) though, just because it was too much trouble to clean it back to optimised condition ;)
This XP installation has been running for 1.5 years, still runs great, and the only time I'll be doing another fresh restore is probably when I throw an SSD in it (I figured I might as well do a fresh install instead of moving the hard disk image, since it's pretty easy to set up from scratch again). I'll probably put W7 on my desktop once I can find a good price for it, right now I just don't feel like shelling out $199 for Home Premium.
