Hate your country? Want to emigrate?
« on: October 31, 2009, 03:08:06 AM »
If you don't mind Norwegian laws, that is. If not, emigrate to Svalbard! They will allow you to emigrate, no questions asked.

As long as you are a citizen of one of the following countries:

I found this interesting.

"All citizens and all companies of every nation under the treaty are allowed to become residents and to have access to Svalbard including the right to fish, hunt or undertake any kind of maritime, industrial, mining or trade activity. The residents of Svalbard must follow Norwegian law though Norwegian authority cannot discriminate or favor any residents of a certain nationality."

I'll be neighbors with Ace!

One drawback though, It's within the arctic circle.   :-\

Does that mean someone would have Norwegian citizenship? Maybe ace would know. I'm thinking no...

Frozen, yes. Shit hole? I'm not so sure. According to their website and some pics I've seen, it looks gorgeous.

But yeah. A bit isolated. I would change my tune if Palin or her equivalent gets elected in 2012 though.

Betwaan oktober 28th and february 15th Svalbard is engulfed in more or less total darkness. But it might not be as cold there as it's lattitude suggests since it's warmed up by the gulf stream. It would be a nice place to have a summer cottage in :)

Except that it's just sea and mountains.
No woods or lakes.
Might get windy.

I wonder if it's got good internet connection?
Wouldn't be surprised if it had better one than us finns over here...

Because we can!

"The Svalbard Undersea Cable System consists of two 1400 km long submarine communications cables from Harstad on the Norwegian mainland to Svalbard. It is operated by Telenor and officially opened 2004-02-01. Its capacity is used by NASA, the United States Department of Defense, the European Space Agency, UNIS and others.

It was built 2003 by Tyco Telecommunications (Morristown, New Jersey, USA) for the Norwegian Space Centre. The earth/ground station on Svalbard is a key site for collecting remote sensing data from polar orbiting satellites, such as those from NOAA, due to its close proximity to the north pole (many of these satellites are polar orbitors; e.g. follow an orbit which almost crosses over the pole). It is operated as an extension of the main Norwegian ground station in Tromsø (the Tromsø Satellite Station, see Swedish Institute of Space Physics).

Currently only one of the 8 optical fibre pairs of each cable is in use, yielding a 10 Gbit/s transmission capacity per cable, with a prospective maximum capacity of 2500 Gbit/s per cable."

Svalbard Undersea Cable System

If you can tap in to that shit you might get a superb connection.

Hmmm.... beautiful scenery, faster and cheaper internet, cheaper cell phone rates, satellite remote sensing opportunities, far from the potential U.S. nuclear blast zone and political lunacies/insanities.

Cool (in a few different ways)!  Tempting...

Looks very nice.  It wouldn't be a bad place to go visit, but i think i'll stick to my warm climate.
I have typed these words and you have been forced to read them.  Now you can go cry in the corner if you like :)

So tempting!  Norway has the worlds highest standard of living!  Since Svalbard is a territory of Norway operating under their law, I don't think it would be far off.  I think it might be too cold for me though.  "Considering the high latitude, the west coast of Spitsbergen has a mild climate due to the Gulf stream, and the sea is normally free of ice from June to December. The average temperature in Longyearbyen in January is -15.8 °C, and in July 6.1 °C." -svalbard.com

Nah man, It's not a territory its technically a part of Norway. The Bouvet island and the Peter island would be examples of Norwegian territories. If we are going to be picky :).

From what I can tell:
It's extremely expensive to live there.
It's very difficult to find work there.
The state will almost certainly reject residence if you have not already secured employment and housing.
You need to be fluent in Norwegian in order to find a job.
The range of available work is very narrow, requiring very specific skillsets and education.

Hardly a haven for immigrants.
