Ubuntu, Linux...all confusion.

Actually instead of going Ubuntu, I would recommend Linux Mint, an Ubuntu derivation customised for video playback.
It will give you less trouble with h.264 then Ubuntu might...

Mint 5 or Mint 9 now is the question.
