Sounds like a head crash.

Does it sound like any of the ones on this site?

This one has brand specific noises.

You know, I feel bad for you, but why the hell did you have important information on an 8 year old hard drive with no back up?

With really important data, keep a backup on really reliable media.  Hi-MD is pretty good, DVD-RAM is good and can be burned by any modern dvd burner, Tape is better but far more expensive.  If you do manage to recover the data, go get a package of DVD-RAM discs and burn it to those.

A head crash is game over. Rescue what you can and remember to make backups in the future.

Run along to a computer stor and get something to make permanent backups.  DVD-RAM discs are $1.5 each, data recovery I'd you did have a head crash would run from $500 - 2000.

DVD-Rs aren't the same as DVD-RAM discs.

I think external hd is a better solution for storing backups

RAID6 + regular backups to multiple media formats, I'm paranoid.

Oh, I have backups for important data. The RAID is just to guard against catastrophic failure (doesn't guard against disk failure of course, but when I hear that clicking sound I'll be glad the drive is RAIDed and I have a spare one.)

I had a HDD that did that but never crashed. It would *click click click* and the HDD wont responded when it clicks but would work when it stops. I still use that drive and the noise has stopped

What are DVD-RAM disc?? and what is the different between DVD-RAM & DVD-R/DVD+R??

DVD-RAM

Superior Data Integrity
Faster Transfer rates
Rewritable 100000 times vs 1000
DVD-RAM is a true Rewritable disc. It can overwrite without erasing
Durability. DVD media is written between two clear layers, sandwiched.
this allows to direct benefits:
1. The data layer is more protective against scratching
2. DVD media is symmetric and will resist warping due to heat and
   other environmental factors
Larger capacity.
Available 2.6GB, 5.2GB Double sided, 4.7GB, and 9.4GB double sided
Cartridge (type II) and removable cartridge (type III and IV)
Allows direct video streaming from video source
Fully compatible with DVD camera systems

DVD-R

Superior compatibility with home DVD players
Compatibility with most DVD-ROM drives (the majority
of DVD-ROM players will not read DVD-RAM discs)
Ease of use. Transfer all your videos to your computer and record
them to DVD.

I would use DVD-R for backing up files. I wouldnt use DVD-RAM for that
