l'd like to see a retelling following the manga, it would indeed be a lot better, but the ending in both was very similar if l remember correctly, more likely, the Anime ending was more like a fanservice.

From what I've read of the manga, they are very close in general. Whether or not they eventually diverge, however, is something that I wouldn't know.

There very similar to a point then the Manga goes off in a different direction the ending's well the Anime ending is ambiguous as leaves the watcher to decide.

1: When Kouta heads towards the gate at the end, the music box representing Lucy stops. At the same time, the grandfather clock representing Nyu starts working. These signify the end of Lucy, and the begining of Nyu. This being true, I beleive that the person waiting behind the gate is Nyu, who came back for Kouta.

2: Nyu's seashell Kouta put inside the music box symbolizes Lucy's guilt, sadness, and resentment for killing Kouta's family. Since Lucy's last image of her flashback of happy times with Kouta was the music box, the music box represents the happy times the two of them had together. This means that the happy feelings overcome the bad times that the seashell represents, and as the person approaches the gate the grandfather clock starts up again, which represents a new time together without the mixed feelings of the past.

But that's just a hypothesis on the ending of the anime.

The manga gets all very confusing till the last chapter to be perfectly honest, not going to go into too much detail as people might want to read the manga in the future, but the ending are vastly different. Very much worth reading though.

Nyu handed the gun to Kouta. She wanted to die, as she was in pain, but she still loved him, so she wanted him to do it. It's technically assisted suicide. Thats how Lucy/nyu dies as she loosing both of her consciences and is and was turning into something worse then Lucy pissed off to the max. not a great explanation but there lot more too it, very basic synopsis on the death of Lucy/Nyu in the Manga.

Lucy and Nyuu are one and the same person, however Lucy is the Violent Victim while Nyuu is the Gentle newborn life that was given to her when she met Kouta in the past, for some reason he didn't resent her being Diclonius, he was very kind to her, thats how Nyuu was as well, when Lucy arrived at the beach when she broke out from the facility, wich was an epic episode so to say, it was a laugh from fate that he was there, she didn't even need to look at him, she recognized him instant she heard his voice, and collapsed, however her mind needed to function for the time being as she hid herself and gave surface to the gentle side of Lucy that she learned in the past from him, by the end of the anime Lucy and Nyuu have a talk in their mind, and at the final Lucy's music box stopped showing she decided to stop the old Lucy stuff, being the victim all the time has worn her down, she had enough of this, and the clock started working wich represented the other side of Lucy, the one thought to her in the past, Lucy as Nyuu and Nyuu as Lucy became one person, they both loved him deeply, but probably would never bear to again see his face from the guilt of the past, however that scene represents that they both will from now on move on, Lucy will no longer be a victim and the embodiment of violence, and Nyuu will have grown, they both merged and now go into the world to experience it as a newborn, after all, noone will be able to tell shes a diclonius anymore, she lost both horns, no one will resent her, no one will hate her anymore, she was given a chance by fate, and shes willing to grow anew.

that is my point of view at the ending in the anime, l bet if we could we would see Lucy walking away both crying and wit ha smile, crying for leaving the one she loved, and smiling for welcoming her new life.

I liked the second half of the manga a lot more than the first half - the anime is good, but it doesn't get to the best scenes.

and an answer for your question, it's because the endubs never match the character played, japanese dubs should never be overdubbed, trailer-man is much better in theese cases, l was really like "WTF" when her leg poped out when those two girls met and she talked about "ppl don't lose legs just like that right ?" and "POP" "guHAAAW!"

I really hope they remake this following the anime, that's probably just a fan dream but ohwell.  I can live with that

Understand the points Havoc making at the end of Elfen Lied, but as i said its ambiguous ending. That is the best way i can describe the ending as that's about what conclusion i came too.

Agreed Lucy for me too is one of my fav characters.

Nana rocks, very cute and sweet even after years of torture at the hands of that institute, see why she had reservations about Lucy though.

wel lat teh same time she was abused she was also brainwashed by that man, it was actually the only thing keeping her together, when she met Lucy and found out about her reasons she finaly started thinking for herself.

Felt sad for Nana, Kurama was without doubt evil in some ways but he had a few redeeming quality's in the fact he did regret his actions on quite a few occasions and truly cared for Nana, even if was in screwed up circumstances. Karma bit him on the ass anyway's about his actions, with is wife and child per say. Lucy actions where the start of her life even if is in the worst possible way, but think Mayu is the one that pretty much saved Nana and forced her to face her future in the inn, even if was with Nyu/Lucy.

Yeah Saber was never Evil but one that controls her had her moments, diminished responsibility.
Sig never fails to make me laugh.
