What is a (hyb) DVD?
« on: November 12, 2009, 08:38:08 PM »
I haven't been to RightStuf in forever,  and they changed their layout around since the last time I've seen it (a few years I think) and I can't find any kind of  help/support/faq section, at least no obvious links (if they are there, very poor design)

I could have sworn in the past they had a definition for it,  something to effect of bootlegs (You know.. those HK versions with crappy engrish and whatnot)  but I know that can't be right.

I was just looking for a clear definition whatever the case.  Because its like almost everything in their store is tagged (Hyb) and the low prices just make me suspicious in that regard.

EDIT: This really the place for this kind of subject? I think this should be moved to General Discussions or Technology.

Uhh being as I saw the term at an Anime store that sells Anime and haven't seen it actually used anywhere else I've ever shopped...  It could very well have been totally unrelated to the "hybrid technology"..   So I posted it in Anime.

But whatever,  as long as I get an answer.  It's fine with me

As found on RightStuf's FAQ, found at http://www.rightstuf.com/rssite/customerService/FAQs/

What are some products listed as (D), (S) or (Hyb)?
Although DVDs allow for the possibility of dual language anime, it is not always possible to license a title for dual language release in the States. So, you end up with manufacturers releasing Subtitle Only (S) or Dubbed Only (D) DVDs. Subtitled DVDs display the dialogue on the bottom of the screen while the actual voices are still in Japanese. Dubbed means the music (probably) is intact, but the voices have been redone in English. You might also see (Hyb) which means that both the subtitled and dubbed versions are available on the same DVD.

From the main page of the site, it's in the banner at the top. It's just written in a plain green font, and really doesn't stand out. In fact, I just noticed that if you hover over the little ! marks below each segment of the banner, it gives you a dropdown that contains the same links as if you had clicked on each segment.

I agree the main page could be a bit better designed, but at their prices, I'll deal with a poorly laid out page.
