x264 alternatives?

No no no no no, under any circumstance do NOT do this. SUPER is awful and can fuck up your system too. Do not use Vdub (and especially not Vdubmod) either, as they are VFW and thus unfitting for usage with x264.
In any case, you might want to try manually updating the x264 build (download the latest from x264.nl and replace the x264.exe in MeGUI's folder with the x264.exe you downloaded) or alternative (I really suggest this) using x264 via CLI.
Takeshi:
I tried manually updating it as you said, Daiz. I have x64 so I naturally tried that first to no avail, neither with x32. Actually, I tried Handbrake and it actually works, however, I am unsure how much post-processing you can do with the program so I would really like meGUI to be able to work again.
Neco:
MeGUI's x264 is lagging behind for some reason.
I didn't get crashes, but trying to encode shit with advanced settings ticked would throw errors about not being able to open the file, or no such flag, etc.
There is a thread on Doom9 that has a link to an updated build. I'd stick with the x32 build unless you have a working 64-bit chain.

One of these should invariably work

o_O;; ....
Slykester:
Are you running megui with admin privileges? and what is the error? Perhaps the encoder is being blocked, right click the executable -> properties. Check at the bottom next to security for an 'unblock' button. You could also try uninstalling, then adding x264 manually (without using the built-in updater to download it). I'd recommend an official build or one of sharktooth's builds.
