4chan has gotten less and less amusing of late but that's how everything goes. Their simply following their own rules.

I equate 4chan to the Mr. Hyde of the internet. There are no rules, as you are not Dr. Jeckle at the moment, you are anonymous, and you are also legion. Therefor you can be free to do whatever the fuck you want. Every once in a while we all have the urge to just throw our arms up in the air and say "fuck everything!" (There's a reason why it's known as the internet hate machine). Much of the Internet's funniest shit has originally come from 4chan.
Oh, and 4chan is never meant to be taken seriously. Ever. This is the internet after all. I giggled at the OP's reaction.
4chan is filled with a lot more 'normal' RL people than you think. In fact the reason why it's now so shitty is because it's gotten passed around so much like a cheap whore and there are too many newfags who can't come up with original ideas anymore.
/w/ and /wg/ are amazing btw for finding awesome wallpapers (almost as good as konachan). I once sat up one night for 2+ hours downloading a huge collection of F/SN walls somebody had posted (and not even caring that i had to get up in the morning). As long as you stay away from /b/ you save yourself most of the trauma (but if /b/ ever goes down for whatever reason like last semester may God have mercy on the other boards).
