anyone here have trouble watching a ongoing series?
« on: November 19, 2009, 04:27:13 AM »
i don't know if it's a good or bad thing i can't get myself to watch ongoing series. it prevents me from watching all of the never-ending anime (aka bleach, naruto, one piece) and all the other ongoing series until i have a chunk of episodes. is anime more enjoyable watching it week by week? and if it is then anyone have any tips to help me break my pet peeve of watching ongoing series?

it is the same for me so no worries.  I watch Naruto S. in 5 episode blocks cause i can't stand the waiting for the long drawn out fights, but bleach i'll watch weekly since it is generally like DBZ and I was a Big DBZ fan back in the day.

But I do the same thing for shorter series like Darker than Black i'll watch in 3 to 5 episode blocks and Canaan i'm going to marathon in one straight shot.

Depends.

Personally I don't mind watching it week by week but in saying that I am usually watching at least 5 other things from the current season of anime so it gets mixed in and I never really feel like I get bored of it. So I even download normal shows week by week as they come out.

For the main 3. Bleach, Naruto and One Piece. Bleach I used to watch in 2-3 week chucks but now I download week by week. Naruto I get off a friend once every 3 months or so. One Piece I am yet to catch up to current, only up to 199. And I see no problem with any of those methods.

Really though it personal preference. I know many people who can't stand the commitment to characters or usually get bored once the storyline evolves from its original story arc.

As for how to break the pet peeve. I wouldn't know. You could try watching it in season chunks and waiting till the next season ends before continuing. Or fill it in with series that are like your on-going series. If you are watching Naruto then watch something with ninjas or martial arts as a base. Bleach could focus on swords or something.

However you have to think. If you are getting annoyed at a series then maybe its not for you. Not everything is for everyone.

[MAL] | Nothing is either good nor bad but thinking makes it so.

It depends on the series in question. If it's a short series (13 episodes or so) I have no problems watching it every week. If it's a longer series/never ending one, I wait until it's completed/in batches.

Me too as well, for those never ending I let it pile up for 10 weeks or so and then get annoyed when I find it one or two episode shy of an arc or fight or whatever...

And for the shorter 13-26 ep. I just try my best to hold out until the series is finished, but at times I just can't - I'm just so sorry I was to impatient for Railgun (I held out till ep7), now I have to wait for it on weekly basis T_T

I can't handle not being able to watch the next episode any time I want. That's why I get so pissed when a series drops off without a complete ending.
That and I have almost 90 complete shows already bookmarked, so the time I get through a few most ongoing shows are over. and then continue the cycle.

When life gives you lemons, you clone those lemons and make super lemons.

I would rather have the series (or at least the season) finished before i start
watching them.I dont really watch much current anime so i dont really have a problem
with it.Macross Frontier i think was the only thing i was downloading episodes while i was
watching it.
I guess lucky for me im still playing catch up so everything i watch is a couple years behind.

I tend to wait for things to finish before I watch them. It annoys me when I get halfway through stuff and have to wait (such as Ugly Betty atm but thats because the torrent is uber slow). I like to marathon tv and anime shows.

I also dislike not being able to watch whenever I want, and the need to wait for next episode. Some are subbed very slow as well.

So I usually just watch complete series, and I usually don't mind waiting for the "best sub" to finish, unless there's a reason why I need to watch it as soon as possible. As many other stated there's always other animes you can watch anyway.

I'm okay with White Album S2 since the anime is so dramatic. I only give exceptions to anime I'd really like. Otherwise, no. I don't watch on-going series. I watch completed series/seasons as it is my policy.

You can just watch completed series in one go rather than waiting a week worth for a single episode to be aired then subbed (plus extra 1-4 days) to watch.

I stay away from pop Anime, with very rare exceptions.

I need actual content and plot progression.  I don't mind if you have backstory episodes or episodes with very little action as long as it offers something new and isn't just a clip show.

I loved Dragon Ball.   I loathed DBZ.  I can't stand Naruto for inexplicable reasons.  I think its a gut reaction to it being the current "fad".  I warmed up to Avatar after I accepted the fact it was a pretty good show, and got a lot more serious as it went on.   I was interested in Bleach for a while but now I really don't care,   because I got sick of the annoyingly cheesey dialogue and drawn out fights + fight recaps.

I love shows that pull me in and that I don't want to end, but I think secretly I like them because I know they WILL end in a timely manner.  Too much of something makes you sick of it.   Like  Bleach, Naruto, DBZ, One Piece, etc..   I just can't stand long running stuff,  almost as much as I can't stand  something that is too short, or that I get hooked on initially but find out it was canceled and offers no complete resolution of the story or official "end-run plot".

I used to be glued to the TV for new Episodes of  Big O, GiTS, Bebop, Lupin, Gundam SeeD, etc.    But overall almost all my collection consists of stand alone movies / OVA's with conclusions,  or episodic  TV Series'

Actually, I find it hard to watch an anime when I have all of the episodes. I have always, actually.

Like Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. I found this easy to watch since it was an interesting story and I watched this weekly. For me, watching weekly shows means I only have to pull half on hour out of my schedule. It seems, with me, that the story isn't all that interesting anymore if I can just start the next episode. I tried to watch Darker than Black, and I had all of the episodes, but not only did I find the story kind of dull, but I wasn't able to make it past the 4th episode. The same with Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan. I also planned to start watching One Piece and had used hours finding the best versions, but that failed too since I become bored with it too fast, watching it that is, trying to find the episodes was actually more fun.

The same goes for manga. I used to be able to swallow an entire Dragonball volume when I had bought it. Some weeks ago I loaned Chrno Crusade at the library, they had all of the 8 volumes. Then I started reading and I felt: "ugh" I don't feel like reading this after all. I didn't even get to read one chapter.

Maybe this is why I've finished so few series. I've maybe seen 40 series spread over 4-5 years.

However, I find movies easy to watch rather than series because you watch it for max. 2 hours and then you're free, the story is over. You don't have to think about: "oh, I still need 10 episodes to finish this". And trust me, I'll never get around to those episodes, I still haven't finished: TTGL, Haruhi, Record of Lodoos, Kekkaishi, s-CRY-ed, Bounen no Xamdou, Azumanga Daioh, Bakemonogatari, Buzzer Beater, D.Gray Man, Darker than Black, DN Angel, Code Geass, Inuyasha, Rurouni Kenshin, Monster & Tales of the Abyss. And most of those are actually quality shows which most people like.

Also, I started watching Dragonball Kai at episode 20. The reason is that I've seen the Saiyan Saga way too many times. Now, I probably wouldn't watch this if it had already aired and SD&Taka had subbed all of the episodes. Shit, 100 episodes, no fucking way. Now following this weekly, oh yes, that I can manage. Or well, not weekly since SD&Taka places Kai behind Shippuuden in their priority list.

Read or Die OVA was exciting and short, just what the doctor ordered, though I did watch the last episode one week later. But interesting to say the least.

Then sometimes the episodes comes out fast, faster than I can watch them, I forget about the show and then I feel this: "ugh" that's why I didn't watch Basquash after all. I had been meaning to watch ever since umai had said they'd be doing it. Don't think I'll get around to that either.

With ongoing shows I like the fact that..I can wait, I can imagine, I can excite myself with what the new episode will bring and that makes me want to watch it when the next episode comes out. Also, my sheduhle allows me to do that. I'm not a person who can sit down/lay down and watch 10 episodes in a row, I don't want to, neither can I do it. I had to do that with Slam Dunk even though I liked the show. I just thought to myself: I want to finish this show tonight! Then I'll just pull myself through those last episodes!

It's going to be interesting if there's anyone else besides me who feels this way as most people here seem to dislike when episodes are still being aired.

I require my shows to have an ending ^_^...   in a reasonable amount of episodes (anything over 50 is too many... and sometimes 50's pushing it)

As for watching show's while they're airing... I'd rather have it completed so I can watch it at the pace I want to watch it at.

I used to be fine with waiting to the end of a series and downloading in batch, assuming it'll end somewhere in the traditional 12-26 range - but I've been regretting it when the series gets licensed and taken down. So I download every episode every week of the series I think I want to watch, then get to them when I'm in the mood.

For serial anime, it depends on whether I read the manga or not - I can skip months of Naruto without much concern, and download the episodes involving the climatic points alone.

I prefer watching anime in long chunks rather then week by week. I don't really get much of a choice though since one of my friends always ruins something for me when I start falling behind. >_<
