It should support softsubs with no problems, but if you don't like the built in video player you can set it to use an external player like MPC-HC or what ever you prefer. The autotagging as watched won't work if you do but otherwise no problem.

Hmm, I thought there was a thread around here somewhere a few months ago that talked about this and was full of useful suggestions.  I can't seem to find it, though. :/

well for Mac i use Plex to run my 1080p stuff.   
program acts as a media center of sorts..

I've been using Boxee for the past couple of days, and I'm pretty satisfied with it.
