Sure, he wasn't around for a very long time, and sure, you might not have grown as attached to him as other characters, but the night before they went into battle, he admitted to others that he too was scared, but he found a lot of his courage in Simon, and that he had his own reasons to fight.

Yup, I remember the scene with Yoko especially. That's the single moment he behaved like a real human being, but I somehow felt it was too little, too late. Had he been a bit more fleshed out, instead of being primarily a loudmouthed yelling idiot, then his loss would've been devastating. Had he grow from an immature kid acting thoughtlessly into the guy who does what has to be done, knowing what it may cost him, then I would've been moved. I mean, he's never been scared before because he had nothing to lose. And everything ends just as he realizes there's more to life than fighting and "being a man", isn't it terribly unfair ?
More than a (supposedly) "charismatic role model", isn't he a guy who got cut short just when his life offered him more than he ever dreamed of ?
How come no one brings up how much he lost, and concentrate only on what his loss meant to his companions ?
Unfortunaterly, it happens only once in the series and I do think it hasn't been prepared well enough.
I mean, weren't we all meant to feel like Simon ?
Which brings me to my main gripe. There's an obvious spiritual filiation joining Simon and Kamina, but why had Simon to turn into a second rate imitation of the former Kamina, instead of becoming the man Kamina could've been if he had lived on ?

Because he wouldn't have been able to wear those FABULOUS star sunglases!
deathman:
He was good for the people that are appealed to these kind of people.....well yeah that loud yelling idiot was in fact a hero.If you dont think so well go ahead ..but he will be epic for some others for eternity.

Kamina's death is epic! Its sad, but it really gets to you. its not "bleh" plus he creates the giga drill breaker at that moment.
and I love the "create-your-attack's-name-on-the-spot" type of thing :P
like at the end when the guy goes "MY-WIFE-IS-THE-BEST-IN-THE-UNIVERSE---SWIIINGG!!!"
and the most epic of epicness is how they defeat the final antagonist. . .with the first ever called lagann attack (lagann impact)
EPICNESS! the final battle scene and the way all the gurren laganns are shown again and only the simplest part is the most important one. . .
TOTAL ANTI BLEH EPICNESS!
Fool010:
Nice for you, but loud and over the top isn't epic enough for me. I'm probably no longer juvenile enough to be thrilled by that.
