50 mb/s line is Fiber optics?

(1/2) > >>

Mikan:
I was talking with soon-to-be step dad in Germany, who said he upgraded his internet from dsl and switched providers to the fastest available connection in germany bieng a 50mb/s down stream and i forgot upload. he said fiber optics too but, I was talking to a friend in NL
who said he's on 60/mb's fiber optics and switching to 120 mb/s fiber optics soon. which makes 50 kinda... obsolete.

DaggerLite:
Fiber optics have a lot more capacity and less noise than DSL. Even if the service provider can't offer more than 50 Mb/s (due to various reasons), just having fiber is a big step up from using telephone lines. Either way, the difference between 50 Mb/s and 120 Mb/s is not that big today. You won't max out in most cases, and when you do, whatever you're downloading won't take long to download on either connection. Perhaps you could call it obsolete in a few years, but not now.

Uploading is a different matter. I'm guessing that the upload is equal to the download, or at least that's how it is here. It's good to see that lines across the world get increasingly better nonetheless. The more upload some ISP in Holland has, the more data its users can transmit to me and others. I wouldn't be jealous. If you've got a decent line, be happy with it.

fiber optic is simply the type of connection, there is no limit to how low they can sell you or anyone else capped internet, and certain providers may be limited on how fast they can offer due to several reasons some of which being population density and internet usage per customer, etc etc.

Either way nothing wrong with 50mb connection that is still more then 6mb/s in download speed which is enough to choke a donkey

Scudworth:
I've been looking at Fiber optic in my are and no matter how fast their download is they cap the upload at 1Mb/s
pisses me off a little bit. If I upgrade from cable I at least want to seed better.

of coarse internet providers love hearing that you need fast upload speeds so you can seed on torrent sites.

thats why you lie and say you need fast upload speeds because you hold video conferencing, and things like that
