PS3's used by US Military
Talapus:
Just a misunderstanding then. "Ditched" implies that they were using Microsoft before this.
If you can work your software around the multicore architecture of the Cell chip, it really is a powerhouse. And considering the subsidy by Sony, it is no wonder many have used them in academic and amateur persuits. Military use is a little more unusual, but it has been long enough that it is not unexpected.
Tatsujin:
power of supercomputer chip :D parallel processing FTW.

*darkjedi nitpicks Tatsu*
PS3 chips are microcomputer chips.
*darkjedi scampers off*
Proin Drakenzol:
Cell processors are really shitty general computing chips.
Also: the US military has hardly "ditched" Microsoft. The user end side of military computers is Windows (Windows XP on the ship I'm on).

Hence IBM's termination of the Cell program. They'll continue to be used as coprocessors in some Opteron high end server and HPC designs, and will get shrunk to fit into a variety of media devices, but the whole promise of Cells everywhere was quite a load of bullshit.
