Favourite Anime Studio
« on: November 28, 2009, 03:39:43 PM »
So since I became an active member of the anime community I've been seeing a lot of:

- "Oh, BONES, hell yes, I hope this is gonna be as good as [insert BONES show]"

- "Yah, another Ghibi! Finally!"

- "Manglobe, hmm, yeah, they're pretty decent"

- "Madhouse = this is gonna be good!"

So that got me thinking? Which one is your favourite? Why is it your favourite? Also, please state how much you've seen of the studio you like the most.

For me it's gotta be BONES. I've seen Soul Eater, Sword of the Stranger, Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop - Tengoku no Tobira and Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 from them. Also, seen some of Darker than Black and Bounen no Xamdou. I plan to watch everything they've done one day; I'm glad they're a relatively new studio that haven't done an insane amount of shows. :D And I'm of course following Brotherhood every week.

From what I've seen only Soul Eater was a bit disappointing, though mind you, it lies in the very end of the story. But I don't dislike it as much as some people do. All in all, Soul Eater was one great anime up until the end.

What I like about BONES is of course their animation, this is especially apparent when someone is fighting another.. I don't know how to describe exactly, but if I were to try I'd say it's uncontrolled yet controlled animation. Sounds stupid, but it's like they have actual people's movements recorded just like movies/games do when they need to make believable movements. That sounds even more stupid. An example from Soul Eater (4:55-5:35).

(I'm of course commenting according to AniDB's information regarding what BONES was in charge of)
Story-wise there's a few I can't comment on since BONES didn't create the stories. Although I liked Sword of the Stranger's story.

I added the most known ones, but do tell me if your favourite isn't on the list. I hope I'll be able to edit. Guess I can.

EDIT: I'd like to outline something, yes, literally. I didn't create this so you could bash studios just because they haven't done anything that you liked. It was merely a curious question as what was everyone's favourite and why. Please, let's keep this clean.

You're missing a few like:
Sunrise
Studio 4C
Satelight
AIC

I don't really have a favourite studios, I judge each work independently. If anything I try to have more check on the staff behind each work. For example, most people seem to agree Gonzo did many good works previously, while sucking nowadays. What the average animefan doesn't know is that they lost some of their most talented staff, which explains a lot.

And for longrunning studios staff can change almost entirely, which is why it is hard to judge a studio with hundreds of animes spanning over several decades.

Not to mention that big companies like Madhouse get a job, then they outsource it to other smaller companies, only doing the "big titles".

The lack of Production I.G. makes me die a little inside, but next to that I would say bones.

Well perhaps put "Studio Ghibli" in the list? I just love all their work.

l was kinda dissapointed it's not shown here, OP doesn't seem well informed is he ?

Studio Ghibli makes some impressive works, even if it isn't that much compared to others, it's amazing, l too love their works.

I didn't pretend to be well-informed, I did add a "but do tell me if your favourite isn't on the list.".

I did add the studio, though only as "Ghibi". Anyway, that's how I thought it was spelled, though I have recently discovered how it was really spelt.

They all do some good work, but for me it's got to be GAINAX. I know I can watch one of their shows and I will doubtlessly be impressed (it helps that FLCL and Gunbuster are two of my all time favorites).

Eh, let's not go there. AFAIK, Fumoffu and The Second Raid was good. Added.

I love Studio 4°C. They make interesting and unusual stuff. My vote went to those guys.

I like a handful of them consistently, but I think very few actually try to take an original direction. No matter how much heat SHAFT gets for their stuff, I think they're good at what they're doing. Of course, Ghibli and BONES both get props for their high production quality as well. I wouldn't really watch a Ghibli show on my own, though. I also like Madhouse a lot for the shows I've seen.

SHAFT, for being the only studio that dares to attempt avant-garde productions. Evolve the medium :(

Err what? Clannad, Kanon, Lucky Star, Air, K-On and the first season of Haruhi are garbage? What awesome anime planet are you living on. I'd like a ticket. Asap.  :)

You should allow us to choose multiple options, since I have a few favorites.  Changing votes would be good, too, since you keep adding options.

I absolutely love KyoAni's motions.  They also happen to make things that in genres I particularly like, so I tend to think of them as a favorite over say, BONES or Studio Ghibli, who also make a lot of good stuff.  Production I.G makes a lot of good things, but they've also had their bad shows, so I don't get particularly excited just by hearing their name.

Oh yeah, and Shaft is just kinda fun.

The idea was for each person to have one vote since it would be more "fair" and more accurate than if one person voted 6 for six times and one only did one time. Though I guess it wouldn't hurt to let people vote for several studios. Though I can't change that for some reason, care to do your magic?

Changing votes would be good, too, since you keep adding options.
Again, the idea was that people would mention the studio they would vote for before they voted. Although I admit that I could've done a bit better job at gathering studio names. ;) feel free to change this as well, then.
