I found a house!
« on: November 30, 2009, 09:54:26 AM »
I found a house!

It's 1063 sqft., three stories, only a 20 minute bike ride from the base but still no where near other American people (huge plus!), only a 15 minute walk to the trainstation and supermarket, has a view of the ocean and is only ¥189,000 per month (which is my limit for housing to the yenny).

It's got a Japanese style bath, one of the super-robot toilets with a heated seat and a water jet to clean out your buttcrack.

The only downside is that it's all softwood floors, no tatami mat rooms v_v

Now all I need to do is put in the paperwork for my command to approve.

$2 grand (US) a month? Damnnnnnnn. Guess I'm spoiled living in the middle of nowhere Ohio. Good luck anyhow though. If you haven't snagged a significant other yet, try to score a young Japanese cutie. Maybe she can help you pay some bills.  ;)

the "my limit for housing to the yenny" phrase is there because the Navy gives me a "use it or lose it" ¥189,000 a month OHA (Overseas Housing Allowance). Anywhere else they give you BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) which they give you in full and you can use or not an pocket the difference. Here in Japan I get up to my limit but if I get a less expensive place I don't see the extra money. So "maxing out" my housing allowance has no detrimental effect on my finances.

I also get a special Utilities allowance.

Both OHA and the utilities allowance are non-taxable. The OHA is pegged to the fixed yen value, so I don't get screwed over month to month.

Now compare that to the $90 that Korean petty officers receive each month with the only benefit being the barracks. And these aren't conscripts. Really what the fuck. :(

an 1hr and a half cab ride in Japan costs around $100 US. And 1hr30min cab ride in S.Korea costs about $15.

I know, I've done both.

relic2279, you heard him; come to Korea. You'll live like a king. Language is no problem. We know English, yes. Well, more than the Japanese at least.

I beg to differ.

Also: I've been both places. I win.

You haven't seen enough yet.

There are other American personnel who prefer Korea to Japan also. Cost of living is one.

Korea is a dirty shithole of a country. And there aren't really any Navy personnel in Korea and everyone knows the other branches have more mentally retarded personnel than the Navy.

Also, you can buy all your electronics in Korea for about 25% stateside retail, so that 60" plasma screen in now within my budget.

But alas, not to be. I won't be able to make it to Japan until 2012 at the earliest. Still, Italy should be nice for a couple years, then request Japan for my next tour. congrats on the house, Proin.

It's actually pretty reasonable for something like that.  He'd spend a lot more in a nice area of NY or San Fran, and about the same or a bit more in Chicago.

A bit expencive, just moved myself into an apartment that cost me about 516 Euro per month. However it is in the middle of the centre of my town and is about 90 square meters. Enough for both of us.
For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

Cool what branch of the military are you in?

Proin's an NCO in the U.S. Navy. AntiPaladin is in the U.S. Navy too.

Some U.S. servicemen quite like their stay in Korea.

Quote from: U.S. armyman no. 1
I enjoyed my tour there quite a bit. I avoided getting stationed there almost my entire career, for no real good reason. In 2004, after being in the US Army for 14 years I received orders to go. The only regret I had was not going sooner, I hope to go back before I retire. The Korean people were great, the country was beautiful, being in 2nd Infantry Division was rewarding.

Quote from: U.S. armyman no. 2
I had 4 tours to Korea. 60-61, 69-70, 78-79, 81-82.

During the 1st tour I was actually driving a priority load through Seoul when Gen Park lead the Coup d'etat. I was scared to death. With all the soldiers and tanks every where, I didn't know if they were North or South.

The 2nd tour I spent most of the time at a small camp near Rod Range. Beautiful country in that area. That year was the best overall of the 22 years I spent in the Army.

3rd tour was the easiest tour, as I was at Camp Humphreys, and was NCOIC of the TMP Motor Pool. Had 3 military, and about 50 Korean Civilians, with most working there at least 20 years.

4th tour was at Cp Colbern and Camp Red Cloud, and many mountain tops. 6 to 6 1/2 days a week, 12-14 hours a day. Was in the 304th Signal Bn, that the 2nd ID guys called 304th Infantry, since we spent way more time in the field than they did.

Overall, these 4 tours were the most rewarding of my 22 years. Seeing Korea go from a War torn 3rd World country, to a modern Asian power, is amazing. I am sure that if Gen Park would not of took control, and made the huge changes he did, Korea would be under the control of the Nut Case up North.

Win.

Proin has seen too little. Judging from his age he's served for, what, three years? Four years? Greenhorn. (kekekeke!!!) He hasn't stayed in Korea for long.

You can't call these Korean-loving U.S. armymen mentally challenged just because they decided to serve and leave Korea in good spirit and because they were not Navy personnel.

To each man his own.

The second quote is from a guy going from the 1960s-1980. Totally useless information you doof.

The first one fares better, but it's only 1 voice from a voice of many. Not to mention you can get people going to Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia etc. who will say the place is pretty, nice, people are warm etc. Yet the truth still states those countries are poor as shit.

In the (not quite) two years I've been stationed in Japan I've spent just over two months (non-consecutive) in Korea.

And I'll hit three years February 27, 2010.

And I'm a Petty Officer 2nd Class. Equivalent to an Army or Marine Sergeant or an Air Force Staff Sergeant. More specifically I'm an Electronics Technician 2nd Class since my rate (my job) is Electronics Technician.

No, but I can call them retarded because they're in the Army. Fuck Army, Go Navy.
