I found a house!

It's 1063 sqft., three stories, only a 20 minute bike ride from the base but still no where near other American people (huge plus!), only a 15 minute walk to the trainstation and supermarket, has a view of the ocean and is only ¥189,000 per month (which is my limit for housing to the yenny).

It's got a Japanese style bath, one of the super-robot toilets with a heated seat and a water jet to clean out your buttcrack.

The only downside is that it's all softwood floors, no tatami mat rooms v_v

Now all I need to do is put in the paperwork for my command to approve.

$2 grand (US) a month? Damnnnnnnn. Guess I'm spoiled living in the middle of nowhere Ohio. Good luck anyhow though. If you haven't snagged a significant other yet, try to score a young Japanese cutie. Maybe she can help you pay some bills.  ;)

the "my limit for housing to the yenny" phrase is there because the Navy gives me a "use it or lose it" ¥189,000 a month OHA (Overseas Housing Allowance). Anywhere else they give you BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) which they give you in full and you can use or not an pocket the difference. Here in Japan I get up to my limit but if I get a less expensive place I don't see the extra money. So "maxing out" my housing allowance has no detrimental effect on my finances.

I also get a special Utilities allowance.

Both OHA and the utilities allowance are non-taxable. The OHA is pegged to the fixed yen value, so I don't get screwed over month to month.

Now compare that to the $90 that Korean petty officers receive each month with the only benefit being the barracks. And these aren't conscripts. Really what the fuck. :(

an 1hr and a half cab ride in Japan costs around $100 US. And 1hr30min cab ride in S.Korea costs about $15.

I know, I've done both.
