Did you use paths tool? you use gimp right?
you can also try the fuzzy select tool....set the threshold pretty high (I used around 80-90 on a 1920x1200 picture)...and it should make quick work of removing the background....
using the paths tool is pretty time consuming but necessary if you want a really clean render.

Actually integrated with the rest of the site to see how it looked....Didn't turn out so nice =/...
Gonna have to find a different background color....but shana was made for red :'(
maybe have a css contest? XD

Hmm... I assume that the rest of the site layout will be temporarily made holiday-themed as well, and that is why different banners were needed?

Well since duki wanted the background to integrate well with the current site the possibility is slim...
