I'm new to this, so if this is a stupid question, sorry: can the banner either feature original artwork or does it have to be official images?

Artwork (both fan-art and original) should be fine. It needs to be directly anime-related. If you can link to it on AniDB it should be fine. For instance, if you made a Clannad banner, you could use art from the anime, games or other sources. If the image does not look fairly professional (like your typical fan-art), I wouldn't bet on it getting accepted, however.

Nice banner, but I think Ritsu looks a bit awkward. Do the characters form separate layers? I think it looks like she's been resized wrongly, making her "wider" than she's supposed to be.

Wee-ooh wee-ooh, Anti-Aliasing Police! Just turn on AA on the text. Seeing Rei turned like that is kind of disorienting, but I see you did that to fit a bigger image of her in.

Thanks. ;D

Also, they are all on one layer and were scaled down together, though I also think she looks somewhat skewed. I will try bringing her to her own layer and tweaking her separately and see if I can get her looking less warped.

There's not too much to do about it then. I guess it has to do with the angle and the style altogether. It's not too bad, but if you manage to make it look better with Ritsu resized in her own layer, that'd be nice.

Here is something from "Ghibli Ga Ippai Specials" - House Foods ''Ouchi de Tabeyou'' Winter ver.

Here it is in the context:

I think it fits although "Why donate?" text becomes invisible.

I know it's badly blured, but couldn't find hi-res image of those two scenes and took a screenshot from an online vid.
If someone provides screens from this ad I'll upgrade it :)

Purple one looks great in just about every single way to me. The cut-out, snow falling and text decoration is very well done, I'd say. Santa in the back could perhaps use some anti-aliasing or edge blurring, and I'm not sure if it's important to have a big "T" in "BT."

I like the black one jay85....
The santa works well with a dark sky and stars... Maybe add a moon?

No sweat! I see you used this image (NSFW) and cropped it. We're seeing her from above, which is why I thought it looked a little disorienting.
I was looking at your banner and noticed you missed a few patches of pink between the locks of hair by her neck. If you go in there with the magic eraser (set at a high tolerance; I'm using Photoshop, I don't know if you are), you can erase them easily. Hope that helps!

I tried warping her on her own layer, I like it a little better, not sure what others think.

I fixed the T in BakaBT and blurred the edges of St.Nick like you suggested.

Here is the black one with a moon.

I also spent some hours looking for snowflake brushes and added them to the corrected one as well
