The current arc has been awesome so far, and it sure is nice to see some more of Gintoki's past.

I have watched 21 episodes of the first season, and found them very boring. Is the rest of the series the same?

That's how Gintama is.
First ~36 episodes (if I remember correctly) are not so good...
But later, it goes off with a blast :D Gets more epic (more trolling?) with each episode.
