Anyone still using Xvid?

Ok hold on. Xbox 360 supports H 264. PS3 supports H 264. The PSP supports H 264. Every Blu Ray player I have seen supports H 264 as well. Even Youtube and iTunes have H 264 video. Many DVD players sold these days, especially ones with the ability to upscale to HD resolutions also support H 264 as well. Heck, my cellphone (and most smartphones) has H 264 compatibility. New camcorders and video software all are being written to run on and to support the H 264 codec as well. In fact, these days you have devices being released which have compatibility with H 264, but NOT Xvid. So why the hell do you need Xvid ?
The plague of compatibility exists WITH MKV!!! Not with H 264 !!!
Since you can encode a H 264 in a AVI container or MP4 container (both of which are pretty compatible), why the hell are we discussing the issue of containers? H 264 is becoming the new standard of video. The fault many of you are making is that you are viewing this too much from the perspective of a pirate with fansubs/encodes in your head. This forum is discussing the merits of Xvid, and as far as I can tell, it is losing its often over-boasted pretense of being the more compatible one. And if H 264 is becoming just as compatible as Xvid, then why do we need to use Xvid?
As far as I see it, there isn't a good reason why anyone encoding files today should use Xvid over H 264. There are reasons why they might choose MP4 or AVI over MKV, but that is irrelevant to this forum discussion.

H.264 video streams in avi containers...neh, no. YOu can, but you have to give up some features.

No, every Blu-Ray player supports H.264. H.264/MPEG-4 AVC is required for all Blu-Ray players by the Blu-Ray standard; it is not an optional format.
As to the topic itself, since kureshii tempted me with it on IRC, I'll bite. Do I still use Xvid? Yes; many older and/or more obscure anime releases have no alternative but Xvid. However, when it comes to releases for which there is a choice between H.264 and Xvid, I prefer H.264 when other factors are approximately equal. If there is a noticeable difference in subtitle, audio, or video equality in favour of the Xvid release, then I choose the Xvid release; when there is not, I choose the H.264 release.
With regard to future releases, I would prefer that H.264 become the new de facto standard, at least until a format superior to it comes along. At present, I both have the equipment and am able to appreciate the improved quality of H.264 releases over typical Xvid releases, and the reduced filesize that H.264 imparts compared to an equivalent-quality Xvid encode makes H.264 far more attractive. That H.264 is also (one of) the standard(s) on official high-definition media only makes it more attractive at present.
As it is irrelevant to the question asked, I have no comment on container formats.

Sony single disc, 2.6 eur. Ok, it's always pricy if bought separately. Let's ignore.
Verbatim 16x DVD+R 5-pack. 6.90 eur. Means 1.38 eur per disc.
Same Verbatim DVDs but in a 10-pack spindle (no jewel cases). 11.90 eur => 1.19 eur per disc.
Same Verbatim but in a huge 100-pack spindle. 103.90 eur => 1.04 eur per disc. It seems that even if you bought a million of them, the 1.00 eur would still be pretty much something you cannot break. Why? Because in that 1.00 eur is 0.60 eur Hyvitysmaksu. That leaves only 0.40 eur. And there's 22% VAT for the final price (that is 22% of 1.00 eur, taxes are also taxed with 22%!). 0.22 eur for VAT. So 1.00 eur - 0.60 eur - 0.22 eur = 0.18 eur per DVD is the price that has to account for retailing, shipping, manufacturing... and also for customs tax and corporate taxes. Ridiculous, isn't it?

Woah. That's pricy. Both Sony and Verbatim discs sold in my country cost about 0.30 USD (taxes included). TDK discs manufactured by Taiyo Yuden costs even less.
