Quote from: DVSKaz
Take all the players people own (Xbox, PS3, DVD w/ DIVX/XVID, XBOX 360, PSP) and compare it to the puny amount of people who own the 2 devices you mentioned.
Ok hold on. Xbox 360 supports H 264. PS3 supports H 264. The PSP supports H 264. Every Blu Ray player I have seen supports H 264 as well. Even Youtube and iTunes have H 264 video. Many DVD players sold these days, especially ones with the ability to upscale to HD resolutions also support H 264 as well. Heck, my cellphone (and most smartphones) has H 264 compatibility. New camcorders and video software all are being written to run on and to support the H 264 codec as well. In fact, these days you have devices being released which have compatibility with H 264, but NOT Xvid. So why the hell do you need Xvid ?

The plague of compatibility exists WITH MKV!!! Not with H 264 !!!

Since you can encode a H 264 in a AVI container or MP4 container (both of which are pretty compatible), why the hell are we discussing the issue of containers? H 264 is becoming the new standard of video. The fault many of you are making is that you are viewing this too much from the perspective of a pirate with fansubs/encodes in your head. This forum is discussing the merits of Xvid, and as far as I can tell, it is losing its often over-boasted pretense of being the more compatible one. And if H 264 is becoming just as compatible as Xvid, then why do we need to use Xvid?

As far as I see it, there isn't a good reason why anyone encoding files today should use Xvid over H 264. There are reasons why they might choose MP4 or AVI over MKV, but that is irrelevant to this forum discussion.

Every Blu Ray player I have seen supports H 264 as well.
No, every Blu-Ray player supports H.264. H.264/MPEG-4 AVC is required for all Blu-Ray players by the Blu-Ray standard; it is not an optional format.

As to the topic itself, since kureshii tempted me with it on IRC, I'll bite. Do I still use Xvid? Yes; many older and/or more obscure anime releases have no alternative but Xvid. However, when it comes to releases for which there is a choice between H.264 and Xvid, I prefer H.264 when other factors are approximately equal. If there is a noticeable difference in subtitle, audio, or video equality in favour of the Xvid release, then I choose the Xvid release; when there is not, I choose the H.264 release.

With regard to future releases, I would prefer that H.264 become the new de facto standard, at least until a format superior to it comes along. At present, I both have the equipment and am able to appreciate the improved quality of H.264 releases over typical Xvid releases, and the reduced filesize that H.264 imparts compared to an equivalent-quality Xvid encode makes H.264 far more attractive. That H.264 is also (one of) the standard(s) on official high-definition media only makes it more attractive at present.

As it is irrelevant to the question asked, I have no comment on container formats.

So if DVD are less than 0.50 eur there, it's at least 1.1 eur here. Hey, lets not just assume things. I'll see the actual prices from some big retailer.
Sony single disc, 2.6 eur. Ok, it's always pricy if bought separately. Let's ignore.
Verbatim 16x DVD+R 5-pack. 6.90 eur. Means 1.38 eur per disc.
Same Verbatim DVDs but in a 10-pack spindle (no jewel cases). 11.90 eur => 1.19 eur per disc.
Same Verbatim but in a huge 100-pack spindle. 103.90 eur => 1.04 eur per disc. It seems that even if you bought a million of them, the 1.00 eur would still be pretty much something you cannot break. Why? Because in that 1.00 eur is 0.60 eur Hyvitysmaksu. That leaves only 0.40 eur. And there's 22% VAT for the final price (that is 22% of 1.00 eur, taxes are also taxed with 22%!). 0.22 eur for VAT. So 1.00 eur - 0.60 eur - 0.22 eur = 0.18 eur per DVD is the price that has to account for retailing, shipping, manufacturing... and also for customs tax and corporate taxes. Ridiculous, isn't it?
Woah. That's pricy. Both Sony and Verbatim discs sold in my country cost about 0.30 USD (taxes included). TDK discs manufactured by Taiyo Yuden costs even less.

I generally use TDK myself, they are way cheap, I picked up 100 for for USD $25 last week (thats 25cents (USD) a piece and I can fit around 30 episodes of a random series on each one, then play it on my TV, lose it, break it, whatever, it doesnt matter becuz they are so cheap)

Why has this simple question become a stupidly indepth debate? What does the price of a DVD have to do with the original question? You guys seem to just be arguing for the hell of it... :/

How come the people who lost the debate because they not only did know nothing about what "codec", "container" and "HD" means but also refused to shut up, now criticize the fact that the there was an in-depth debunking of (their) bullshit going on?

AVI = XviD, MKV = h.264.
MKV = is CPU heavy, not for old computers.
AVI is good quality video, MKV is blocking, stuttering shit.
AVI = SD, MKV = HD.

... anyway, debunked. No need to re-debunk them.

And most importantly, Tokyo Hot HD is streamed using WMV!! Everybody wins!!

Unless you're talking about audio then maybe not as WMP9 Pro Audio is still... you know... but that's another story.

There never was a debate.  Just off-topic B.S.ing.
-Like it or not, some people still use XviD for playback.  That dead horse is lookin' deader all the time.
-Like it or not, fansub groups prefer encoding with H.264.  That dead horse is also lookin' deader all the time.

Geez, it really reeks in here!

Makes me hungry.  Could you please add a little S-MPEG4 v2 with that WMV?
Some FLV and AMV might also help a bit.

Up there talking bout "high quality" HDMI cables

--

Bring yourself down to an electronics store ( the kind that is run by a 50-ish year old guy who's an electronics buff - who sells capacitors, transistors, solder, and has testing equipment. )

Ask the guy his opinion on HDMI cables - and cables in-particular.   If you need proof of equality - the guy usually has some meters & signal generators there.   It'll prove his point scientifically.

Needless to say - good cables aren't expensive - they're just often overpriced at rip-off prices.   A decent cable shouldn't cost you more than $20.  It's just wires -  wrapped in a layer or two foil - packaged up in a plastic jacket.  Oh, and there's a piece of metal & plastic on the end of it.   Not exactly high-tech.   If you pay more than $20 for a wire -

[ Just a note here.   I know all about twisting - signal balancing that it does, interference, solid core vs twisted core internal wires, etc etc etc.   I'm keeping the argument simple.   I prefer simplicity. ]

well -

You're the guy who PT Barnum talked about.

( Especially if you own any Monster Cable products - especially that.   Monster cable is a brand of idiocy.   If you own that shit - you are screaming "I'M A MORON" as loud as you can - to the point where your lungs are about to implode. )

[ Just another caveat here - if you buy the $20 wire from a store that sells $2 wires - it's going to be very, very different than if you buy the $20 wire from a store that sells a $100 wire.    The store that sells the $100 wire - is selling you the $2 wire for $20. ]

There never was a debate.  Just off-topic B.S.ing.

Wow, lol, I see this thread has exploded into one mad debate.

Personally - I'd vouch for lower quality releases - not horrible, but half of what it should be.   It's fansub - it should be fansub, not collector grade.

From my day, we encouraged each-other to go out and really support what you were getting ... vs just getting it.   As in - if ya like it that much, go buy it.   Now I'm seeing arguments here about all of the DVD style features aren't in the downloadable package.   Don't you think that will cause ... just a little bit of pain to the industry we all love here?

I mean - even when I was crazily buying stuff - it was literally 4X more expensive.   Now you get whole series for like - nothing.

Guess though - I come from a dying era.  :|

Ordering stuff online does wonders for ones wallet. I don't even remember when I've last bought DVDs from Finland.
