not to mention the point of the ereaders in general is that the screens on many of them are designed not to strain or stress the eyes when reading on them for hours on end.
As for reading manga thats completely different, but if your actually looking to read books on it just think about how shitty it is to read dozens upon dozens upon hundreds of pages on your pc monitor it sucks.

Wouldn't you just be competing with netbooks and tablet PCs at that point? Cost-wise, these readers are already pretty close. Start adding functionality and draining more power, and you're basically making a netbook.
A netbook with longer battery life and a screen that doesn't make my eyes bleed after a few hours.  Oh, and no keyboard.

I don't want more cpu power; I want more flexibility in what I can do with it.  I'm not planning on writing code on the thing, but merely want to be free of any silly restrictions that are placed upon me by the software shipped with the device.

I don't need this for manga/on-line comics. This is going to be a present for my relitive who likes to read book.  I thoght this would be good for her since she has about 150-200 books in the basement.

I don't want to derail the thread much longer, but wouldn't many of these restrictions exist so as to ensure publisher support? I have to wonder whether a Linux eReader would be financially viable. Would publishers support an open eReader? A eReader without books, well it wouldn't be worthless, but you sure aren't going to sell a bunch of them.

Not really.... The screen is pretty sharp and zooming and panning is easy...

Firstly, are you sure said relative would appreciate the e-reader? I have about 350 books sitting in my studio, and if someone tried to tell me to get rid of them for an electronic version I'd tell them to fuck off. I like paper. I'd use an e-book reader for research books for uni and the like. :)

Until you got used to it... or went on a trip where taking more than one or two books was impractical due to space limitations buy you could reasonably expect to go through more than one or two books.

Once I, too, was an unbeliever. Then I got my Kindle  :P

The linear nature of your Euclidean geometry both confounds and befuddles me.

I'm used to lugging plenty of sketchpads and things round anyway. A few paperback books doesn't bother me.

Plus, you cant download cheap charity shop books

First im not going to tell my aunt to get rid of her books That was never my intention. I said this as a reference to her love of reading. Beyond this I must admit that this might not be a good idea for her. Right now this idea is most likely too late for holiday since the first day of it is tomorrow. I thought of this idea when in a mall and they had the sonny e-reader on display in one of those in-door walkway stores. The main reason i thought this would be good is because my library has a data base of free books she could get useing this thought our Internet connection. At least i believe so.
