Old Hard Drive

So I finally got my PCI-e to IDE controller card.
Im still working on it since the system cant recognize it =.=
im looking for the drivers. . .
anyways. .

I hooked up an old hard drive to a cable that is hooked into the motherboard.

So I go to that hard drive and try to go to my downloads folder. .. but OH! Its inside documents and settings and I dont have permission to access that folder!

anyone know how to remove that security thingy?
I know the password that I used on that computer but . . how do I bypass that security or what do I do to recover those files?

The easiest way to bypass the encryption is to boot into linux with ntfs support. Linux will ignore all file permissions on the drive. Once you get your stuff, reformat the drive.

Another way is to use a data recovery software that ignores file permissions

Lupin, isn't the HDD also not being read correctly?  For instance, since there's file permissions and such, I would assume that there are windows files still on that HDD? For which, if those files are intact, the computer (even if it's told which is primary and which is slave) will still ask you a dual boot question as to which windows install you want to load.

At least that's what has occurred to me in the past.

I have vista and win 7. . .I dont want to go all the way to getting a linux client to recover around 10 gigs of anime

You don't have to install linux

just use the live cd. Ubuntu's live cd has good ntfs support. Just boot into it, open the drive then copy the contents to another partition.

OK. . . I opened my case and did this and that

I have 2 hard drives connected to this controller card, the PC doesnt detect them (altough I did see them in the BIOS)

I have trough the Motherboards IDE cable a DVD Burner drive and a 100GB hard drive. none of them are detected
thats the most important part.

I went to device manager and "scanned for hardware changes" and it found my 100GB hard drive, but it said "you cant use it until you format it" . . .
I said "WTF! it had data already on it. . ."
after pondering i went ahead and tried to format. "Windows could not format the disc"

can anyone help on this issue?

I just started to download that linux thing.
Ill try it.

anyways.
The linux was a solution to a problem I cant even have anymore =.= I cant detect the hard drive in the first place (at least not in windows)
ill see if linux can find it and see what I can do from there

You say that the drive is showing up in the BIOS, which means that the system sees it fine. Any issues are going to be with Windows. I agree with trying a Ubuntu or Knoppix live CD to get the files off of the drive. Also, for the permission issue, I assume that the drive is no encrypted and that you are administrator of the computer. If so, you can force it to give you permission to use the files. Right click on the files or folders that that you want, go to properties, Security, open up the advanced menu, go to the owner tab, and set yourself as the owner. Play around in the security menu a bit.

When you say you 'dont have permission to access that folder', do you mean you can SEE the folder, but there's an error message, OR you cant access the hard disk?

If its the first one, its possible to take permission/ownership of the file.

Keywords are Advanced Security Settings for <folder name>


You can change the owner there.  ;)

That's NTFS for you.
If your username and password don't match on your accounts for both drives, it will lock you out. You can, however, access the files through command prompt (I think), using a login command or something. It's been a long time since I had to do it.

Yes! I will try to take ownership as soon as I can get windows to detect it  >:(

I even tried booting from DVD (just to see if it was working)
and voila! it booted from the disc rom.

so I restarted and went into windows regularly
go into mycompuer
and I can only see my main hard drive.
and a floppy disc that doesnt even exist. . .
