got a "new" processor, wat now?
(1/1)
captiosus:
I have just come across an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ processor socket 939 http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K8/AMD-Athlon%2064%203500%2B%20-%20ADA3500DAA4BP%20%28ADA3500BPBOX%29.html while working in my schools computer club. The teacher overseeing the club said i could take the core for my own use, as well as the motherboard and 1GB of DDR memory that was on the motherboard.
Why would i grab such a old core? Because: A) its 64 bit and B) its faster clock for clock over my pentium M 760. So in effect, its the fastest thing i got right now. Just one problem: i cant use it because the board it was on had shot caps and it stopped working shortly after i got it, but i did manage to get an image on my screen for about 30 seconds, so i know the core and memory which was on the board are good.
So my question now is, what do i do with it? sell it for some dough? or grab this motherboard http://3btech.net/as93so939maw.html and use it? At best i can cram 2Gb of DDR266 memory on the board as it stands with my current parts (3x 512MB 266 and 1x 512MB 333), and the video card will be a Geforce 7900GS PCI-E x16 video card http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130056
meanwhile, i shall setup my seedbox, and wait for the IDE controller and wireless card that i should get for christmas :3

Don't invest any money into a socket 939 build. If anything, sell what you can for whatever you can. You can get a much more powerful system than that for pretty cheap.
But it's just not worth putting money into.

If all you need is the motherboard and it's faster than what you have, get it. You certainly won't be able to build a modern system for $40.

40 bucks isn't bad to get a computer up and running. (assuming you have all the other components already). If you're going over 100 bucks, I'd recommend you not bother.
I was given a quad core AMD opteron something with a socket Q or something. Now, I don't recall if I got the socket type correctly, but I only know that after a bit of research, the only Mobos that supported the damn thing were over 300 dollars because they were workstation mobos that all could have 2 cpus installed and support like 32GB ram or something etc. (This would not include the cost I would have to incur to get the psu, ram and other components.)
I just gave mine away to the tech guy who helps our company a lot. (I got the core for free ordering something for the company). The tech guy isn't able to use it either because he doesn't have the correct mobo. xD Though he swears he is going to find the time to order the parts to "play" with this cpu.
