stupid math? X3
« on: December 12, 2009, 03:40:50 PM »
hi :)

did you ever think about a problem too much even if it is not relevant at all?

that happened to me recently when i was playing this new game on my phone (epic chef wars)

as i believe that you are all smart guys and girls i thought maybe you can help me to solve it :)

i want to know how i get the most money in the least amount of time. to get money i have to buy investments (or fight - which i don't want to consider).
and now there comes the basic question:
is it better to buy investments for $240 where i get $10 per hour
or is it better to buy the ones for $1500 and $45 per hour?
the goal is to get 200 slots (=max) of the second investment asap.

so lets say i have $1000 at the beginning and start the game 5 times a day (only during the day..) and buy as much investments as i can every time. what would be the fastest way to get 200 of the second one? :) (think about the fact that the cheaper ones have a better ratio but need to be sold later to make space for the more expensive ones..)

*embarassed for thinking so much about such a stupid problem*

Thanks for the welcome, I actually look around the board for quite a while now ^^

I'm just shy  ;D

So for your game, I would first fill all the slots with the cheap ones.

Once you have 200 of those sell them sell and buy as many big ones as possible.

Then repeat that again meaning,

Buy small ones until all your slots are full again and then sell them again and stock up the large ones.
do this until you have all 200 slots full of big ones.

I think that's the best way, I will try to calculate it when i come back from the disco.

From some back of the envelope calculations, you would need to own the smaller investment for ~43 hours to make it cost effective. I'm too lazy to actually complete the math though.

You know... I never was too smart for maths. I'll just take whatever money I have, go to have some ice cream with a friend and then take him for a walk in the park while the sun sets~. It's easier, funnier and you don't have to stress your mind. You'll live a long life like this. Life is short, and even more, the spring of youth doesn't last for too long. It'll over without you realizing it. Heck, I haven't even experienced love yet and I'm 20 :(

Also, Kurmo, there's no need be shy ;). Here we are all nice people and will take good care of you. You can trust your ass to any of our guys and you can be sure it will never get raped. They'll just die before even trying.

Mm, I'm a programmer so that I don't have to do math.  I'd just hack up a script to get it to figure that out for me.

So... wouldn't the point of the game be to buy as many cheap as you can then save up enough money to buy the high end investment?

IE: Full

Save: (1500*200) - (200*120)

Of course the guys here won't rape you if they know you're expecting it.They'll wait and surprise buttsex you.
Anyway,I have to go with the second one, with the 1500 and 45.

For the 240, you spend 24 dollars per dollar income per hour.
For the 1500 you spend 33.33 dollars per dollar income per hour.

The former is more cost efficient if you want to save a pool of money.

However, the point of confusion is... when is it worth the loss of money in the conversion?
You lose 12x120 for the conversion upwards. Loss in conversion is essentially 2:1. So how much extra income must you earn to put off this difference.

thank you guys for all the input :)

i guess a basic solution could be explained like that:

buy as much of the cheap ones until you have like 150 and then begin to calculate. would you be able to get over 200 in the next 13 hours*? if so buy the larger ones, if not, buy the small ones.. at the time where you begin to sell small ones never sell too much of them. you should have your 200 investment slots full all the time.

*13 hours because you would get $130 for one small investment in that time. $130 plus $120 (=money for selling a small one) will give you a small profit. so you need every small investment for at least 13 hours...

..yeah.. this is not an exact solution and it has very little to do with math but it should work :)

Mm, I'm a programmer so that I don't have to do math.  I'd just hack up a script to get it to figure that out for me.
i had the hope that there would be a formula or something like that.. programming such a problem would be way too much effort i guess :)

umm and how would you solve it? like would you let your program try possibilities until you have the best one? or would you simulate the next x hours every time before you let your program buy a certain investment? also which program language would you use? >.<

It's not rape if you yell "surprise" first. It's just surprise buttsex.

$240 for $10/hour has a 4% per hour yield.

$1500 for $45/hour has a 3% per hour yield.

The cheaper one is more efficient.

If you're capped at a maximum number, however, you'll obviously make more with the more expensive ones once you cap out.

The linear nature of your Euclidean geometry both confounds and befuddles me.
