+1 not really expensive, but still ugly

All you get is a book (and mostly a crappy one) and a paper, beside the ugly ring you have to pay for, and don't really care for after a while.

LOL, you have to pay for the ring? Hehe, at least the medal they gave us in high school was free (even though it was a public school). It also has my name engraved on it. And books... I have a collection of books they gave us for free during high school... I gave them all to my mom as they were pretty crappy... it would had been more useful if they gave kanji books ;D. Aside the book and the medal they gave us a diploma, but a fake one, just to show off for the photo or to put it the wall of your room (I have it there) or wherever you like :D. The real one came six months later and you had to go get it at school.

well at least we get the real diploma at the graduating ceremony

If I were you I would pack that up tight somewhere, and whatever you do DON'T WEAR IT TO COLLEGE. Tis a neon sign saying "I am a Freshman".

A High School Class ring is something that is usually not worn for long.

And what's the problem of being a freshman?

You'll find that there isn't much distinction between class levels at uni, especially due to people progressing at different rates.  Freshmen, however, are an exception; they're the ones who haven't yet grown up, and have no idea how to manage life on their own.
