Ouran High School Host Club
« on: December 15, 2009, 09:25:53 AM »
Only thread i saw on this was someone asking where to find it in recommendations

I saw a funny ass amv for this and looked it up. It sounds like it may be kinda funy but the art has me turned off.. it loooks very shoujo.

Wasn't this animated by Bones? whats up with the art?

I also looked up a few other vids of it after that and some others were very different, more drama heavy. One almost looked like some guy was trying to rape the chick or something o_O

so i was just wondering.. what kinda show is this? more of a comedy? A drama? Is it super shoujo? (hope not) what gives with the art?.. the arts really the big turn off. so flowery >_< it doesnt look like the kind of show i would normally watch but the premise is amusing

Yup, I generally stay away from animated shoujo, made an exception for this for some reason, and yeah, it's pretty good. Nothing amazing, but a good, fun series.

Definitely worth seeing.  Some great characters that bring huge laughs.  Not often you get to see twincest with males.   ;)

That put me off :P. I have no idea how common it is with male twins, but these kind of tendencies you see in a lot of bishounen animes targeted at girls.

wow lotta recomendations.. hmm ya screw it i think i'll give it a look. Im actually snaggin it at 500kbs right now. Not too bad. I figured itd be hard to snag cuz its so old

It defiantly looks outside the comfort zone of stuff i usually watch, but since it sounds like a fun little comedy i think i'll just bite the bullet and jump in. Maybe i'll get used to the artwork after a few epps. So its definatly a comedy and not a tradgety/superdrama right? I guess the brief scene i saw that looked like the guy was forcing himself on the main character (tellin her she could use her body to pay off the vase) wasnt as messed up as it looked =P was worried this was gonna turn super emo dramady or something

Is it really like GTO? o_O I loved GTO, but this didn't look anything like it at all. Care for a translation on that japanese lol.  Care for a translation on whatever the hell you were saying there?

err.. that last comment on twincest kinda had me put off, especially the male part o_O god damn shoujo.. ungh. Ill still give it a chance i guess

what the hells wrong with me. I also just recently finally d.loaded fruits basket. I had never seen it because it looked way too shoujo for me but finally d.loaded it a few days ago. Christ, nxt thing you know i'll be watching Aishiteruze Baby >_<x  (it did look cute but WAY too shoujo for me)

I'm into shoujos myself, so take this with a grain of salt, but... I loved it.

That's not to say it doesn't have its shortcomings. For instance, the whole "everyone here is mega rich" thing kinda felt like it was put in so that the author could do whatever the hell he/she wanted. Some of the settings are so damn ridiculous that it's funny. Also present is the generic reverse-harem that is present in quite a few shoujos now. Not to say that I particularly cared, but almost everyone ends up at least (mildly) liking her.

Other than that, though, everything else is pretty solid. It's genuinely funny, and there's some nice romance mixed in here and there.

Well, they still could, you know. The manga still isn't finished (it's monthly ongoing on onemanga). I'm just waiting until it's complete before I invest time into the manga.

Cute, huh?

It's funny, but I would say it's more like fruits basket, but without  the magic transformations.
So basically it's a comedy reverse harem.

When life gives you lemons, you clone those lemons and make super lemons.

Maybe, but the feel is definitely a bit different. I couldn't keep watching Fruits Basket after some number of episodes, because it just got boring as all hell. I don't know why. I just couldn't pick it back up. Maybe I'll try again later.

Cute, huh?

Just real quick @wolkec: Oh yeah, Welcome to the NHK was totally a comedy. Especially the part where they showed Satou
(click to show/hide)
I don't know about GTO; from what I've seen of that show, it's almost nothing like Ouran at all.

Ouran HSHC is a shoujo, but it's one that's easily accessible and palatable to guys. The "other Haruhi" female lead helps a lot with this, as she's an interesting, intelligent, and sarcastic character. Not like your typical naive Everywoman shoujo leads, e.g. Miaka from Fushigi Yuugi. Don't worry about the twincest thing, it's just an act the guys put on for the girls at the club. That brings up one of Ouran's key points -- the host club's customers = subtle jabs and parodies of RL screaming fangirls who go nuts over male twincest, shounen-ai overtones, reverse harems, and all the other staples of shoujo anime. IIRC that raep scene you described was probably played up by the AMV maker to be more dramatic than it really is.

Those Japanese lines were just the first two lines of the OP, you'll see them when you see them.

There is some drama in Ouran, but I found it to be very well-done. Even the English VA commentaries talked about how well the show could turn on a dime from comedy to drama. While a few episodes do get serious, they never go to SaiKano/AIR levels of angst or emo-ness. So basically, Ouran HSHC is consistently funny, sometimes romantic, occasionally dramatic, and always looks great. The art is very shoujo-styled, but it's still up to the BONES standards you might expect from RahXephon, Eureka 7, Scrapped Princess, Kurau Phantom Memory, etc.

Overall, it's in my top 15 or so anime, and I definitely recommend it. And should anyone want to pick it up on DVD, Funimation released it in cheap 13-ep sets. Both language tracks are excellent -- while the English dub, like nearly any dub, has its detractors, I thought it was great. The director, Caitlin Glass, also plays Haruhi and was a fan of the show beforehand (somehow or another  ;) ;) ). It shows in that the dub is very faithful and gets the name pronunciations almost totally correct.

Aishiteru ze Baby is very shoujo; it's known for poor animation along with extreme sweetness. But I liked it -- if you want a male lead who's not a loser with the ladies, look no further than Ai Baby. The main love interest Kokoro is smokin' hot, too.

never seen NHK. It came out when i was outa the anime scene and i havent really heard of it untill now. Looing at the ADB entry it sounds like a weird mix of comedy and serious/messed up stuff, which i generally find strange when stuffs that schitzo. Not sure if thats a right guess or not, id idn't click the spoielr

the easily accessible to guys thing sounds good to me. like i said i am NOT a shoujo fan. Hell i cant stand clamp shows, or stuff even drawn by them. I totally skipped Code gaess cuz i couldn't stand the clamp art style. Very glad to hear the lead isn't a typical ditzy worthless chick. Miaka from FY irritated the crap outa me, i saw about a dozen or so epps of that before i said F this

A reverse harem sounds intersting to me, nice change of pace. Personally i generally dislike Harem animes, they seem so pathetic. It should be interesting to it flip the switch for once. The twincest thing actually sounds amusing in that regard; ripping on yaoi fangirls, lol. It sounds like the show has some clever little gags in it.

glad to hear were not Saikano lvl of angst.. id oubted it was that bad. I couldn't finish that show. "So basically, Ouran HSHC is consistently funny, sometimes romantic, occasionally dramatic, and always looks great." soundsl ike its up my alley, i may bump it up on my to watch list. I was considering doing fruits baskets first but this sounds like a better shoujo starter course =P I was VERY surprised to see it was done by BONES.. the art just looks so... not bones =P Theyre actually one of my favorite animation studios. Interesting info on the dub but i have no intention of actually buying this.. im not gonna have a fruity shoujo DVD set on my shelf for my friends to rip on me, lol.

err... i was joking about Aishiteruze Baby, lol. I had stumbled across it somehow on ADB and it sounded looked disgustingly cute. i randomly looked up an AMV for it and it actually looked kinda serious..some heavy drama and some chick trying to kill herself. Like you said though the art.. yeesh. It looked abhorrently terrible to me, and im pretty sure this is too far into uber shoujo territory for me to check it out. It does sound like a kinda sweet story though

blea too much crap to watch. Maybe i'll just do one of the DVD's i got in the mail recently. Big sale, got midori no hibi for like 12 bucks (had seen an ep or 2 back in the day, looked hilarious) and Grenadier, which i hadn't seen but it was 12 bucks and looked MEH. Or i'll just jump right into this show. I wanted to finish up moribito but the last dvd hasn't shipped for some reason yet despite the fact its past the release date

watched about 6 epps or so and glad i did =)

This shows pretty damn funny. Im still getting used to the fruity art, but its bearable i supose (i cant belive this is bones)

It definatly rips on the whole fangirl aspect, which is probably why i find it bearable. Hell, they flat out categorize each characters niche, lol. Actually the 2 incest brothers are some of my faves, they just love screwing with everyone. The last epp i saw was the one where they 'fought' and it was actually really good and even a little deep. The ending of it was awesome, the look they gave eachother as haruhi walked away, heh.

tnx guys, glad i gave it a look. Hell I may check out Fruits basket after this, i guess not all Shoujo is shit

Watch Skip Beat!(Yes the male character design is fucking ugly, no that doesn't hurt the show) instead of Fruits Basket.  Fruits Basket is a much more typical shoujo.  It's still good but it'll be a disappointment after watching Ouran.  After Skip Beat!, try Lovely Complex, then Kimi ni Todoke, and then finally try Fruits Basket.  You have to ease your way into this stuff  :P

I think I would have like to ease into kanon and season 2 of clannad bit more.

err i dont know about skip beat, that art looks REALLY fruity. Almost like the 'rose mode' from Ouran all the time. Im not sure if i can handle that

LOL, I actually do have lovely complex d.loaded. Should i just watch that one next then?

Its funny you mention Kimi ni Todoke. I keep reading good things about that, i was thinking of giving it a look. Is it worth jumping into now, or just waiting for it to finish? Its a bit unusual in that its an actual 24 ep series in this day and age, so it should have the time to flesh out the story well if its done right. KnT appeals to me the most simply because the art was the most.. 'normal' i guess outa all of them. Hell, its quite obvious which ones are the guys and which ones are the women, lol. It's still a little girly looking but not nearly as bad as the other stuff.  If i do say f it and just gofor it, is eclipse the way to go? I dont like frostii, and never have heard of sunberries.

Maybe i'll go dig up some AMV's for it, that seems to be how ive been selecting my latest shows to watch, heh.

dont think i'll ever watch kanon scudworth. The art there is just too horrible for me. I did put up with Clannad even though that art was horrid, at least the guys looked ok. I need to actually finish that

Lovely Complex is definitely worth watching if you enjoy Ouran.  It's internationally recognized as an excellent high school romance(the only manga I know of which is used as mandatory school reading material), has a great sense of humor, and lacks most of the more annoying excesses of shoujo anime.  It might be better for you to go with the live action version.

KnT has incredible production quality and the character design is pretty good, much more realistic than most shoujo.  It's just very low key, something which I enjoy but a lot of people hate.  I usually watch FMS, Eclipse, and Frostii's release for each episode.  Either Eclipse or Frostii are fine, and both are worlds better than FMS.

Skip Beat! is great if you can look past the male character design.  Like Ouran, the focus never leaves its heroine and she runs with it.  The boys are always secondary.
