can anyone suggest any fantasy strategy games for me?
« on: December 17, 2009, 06:18:10 AM »
I have a psp, and a xbox360, and a ps2.

One I already have are:

360 -
Spectral forces 3 - I like the game play, but the complete lack of a story kind of made me lose interest. I really mean there is no story in this game. You fight about 50 battles between the chat sequences, and even then there are about 3 sentences of talking before the next 50battles you have to fight.

PS2 -
Stella duce - I have not yet played it, just purchased it a few years ago.
Suikoden tactics - Good game, I enjoyed everything expect the geopanels.
Disgaea 1 and 2 - Love them.
Growlancer generations - good games. But just remakes of really old games.
Makai kingdom - Loved it.
Lapucelle - Was ok, enjoyed it but nothing to exciting.

PSP -
Spectral souls - This was the reason i got SF3 for the 360, I loved everything about this game. Possibly my favorite of the genre.
FF tactics - The game that got me into this genre. Really enjoyed it.

I would classify those more as Tactical RPGs than strategy...

But there's always Dragon Age: Origins for both consoles and PCs. I'm not sure what the official engine designation is but it definitely has a mode that hearkens back to the Infinity engine.

And then there are all of the old Bioware games for PC such as Planescape: Torment (epic story!) and Baldur's Gate.

And if you're not really feeling like videogames you could get some friends and pick up 4e Dungeons and Dragons, which has definitely taken a look back at its origins and really stepped up the tactical play to its wargaming roots.

The linear nature of your Euclidean geometry both confounds and befuddles me.

Ill look into dragon age. Im not sure why, but I had the idea it wasnt any good. Now that I think of it, Im not sure why I came to that conclusion.

Exactly, if you are looking for the kind of games you mentioned, then don't ask for strategy. Since you don't use a pc as a gaming rig, you wouldn't know what a strategy game is anyway.

For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

Keep your eye out on Valkyria Chronicles 2 on the PSP in Q2 2010.  The first one on the PS3 was the funniest tactical RPG I've played in a LONG time.

If you liked Final Fantasy Tactics, you should try and find the original Ogre Battle games.  They are what FF Tactics pretty much just copied.

Ring of Red - the best mech-strategy game I ever played.  Basically, after World War 2 people make these mechs for fighting, and they're not the completely over the top Gundam ones that can fly around and blow up planets.  They move slow as shit and have more realistic capabilities.  Let's of customization options with what you upgrade.

Can't believe you don't have Jeanne D'Arc for PSP, that's exactly what you're looking for.

And the last one I'll advise is Yggdra Union.

Looking back on it, you should just browse every game that NIS and Atlus have ever made.   ;)

Thank you, I will check each of those out. I know of tactics ogre, but Ive never been able to find it.

And ace, I think I have played a real strategy game before. It was called Civil War, I played both 1 and 2. I really enjoyed those aswell. But Im more of a fantasy knights and dragons kind of guy. And all the PC ones seem to be about civil war, or ww2.
RTS's are about all I play on my pc.

EDIT: going to buy Jeanne D'Arc now :D

I went and got jeanne d'arc, and so far its pretty good. Is it a remake of a ps2 game? I seem to remember the name from somewhere before. (no, not the movie.)

Maybe you saw the anime Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne which uses a character thats based on the reincarnation of Jeanne d'arc?

Oh, JdA was already suggested.

If you own a Nintendo console as well, check out Fire Emblem. Great games.

There are lots of Fantasy strategy games for PC, both turn based and real time.

Here are the ones I can think of atm but there are more.

Turn Based:
Heroes of Might and Magic series
Kings Bounty
Age of Wonders series
Blood Bowl (both real time and turn based)

Real Time:
Warhammer series (Shadow of the Horned Rat, Dark Omen, Mark of Chaos)
Warcraft series
Lord of the Rings
Stronghold: Legends
Battle Realms
Memories are meant to fade. They're designed that way for a reason.

Heroes of Might and Magic series

HUGE +1 to this one.  Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is STILL one of the greatest in the genre.

If you're willing to use DOSBox or another DOS emulator, check out Fantasy General for the PC. It's an old game, but a very good turn based strategy game that features spellcasters, monsters, etc., instead of the tired Civil War/WW2 recreations.

Well no I was talking about the 2008 remake not the 1990 original. But the original was not a nes game either. Lots of platforms incl the megadrive but not nes.

Ah, I have only played the original. Is the remake better? I might give it a go next, since I loved the 1990 game.

I believe the Disgaea series is the GOD of all tactical rpgs. You can play that game for 200+ hours and not get bored with the system.

I'm playing King's Bounty: Armored Princess now actually.
The music is superb. Leave it to the Russians to ensure success.
