I'm not sure I want to get into the whole video quality debate, but you probably don't want SubSmith for your archive version. His releases are cross-translated from Chinese fansubs, and as someone who knows enough Japanese to be able to tell, the proportion of amusing "that's not what they said!" moments is generally at least 1 per episode. The benefit of watching SubSmith has mostly been release speed, as I generally just need some pointers from the subs in more complex dialogue situations, so the errors naturally induced by cross translation weren't as much of a problem for me. I definitely don't recommend it as an archive to people who don't know any Japanese though.
As a side note, if you liked SubSmith's encode the best and someone else's subs the best, it would be fairly simple to remux the softsubs.
