Just curious, but why? (I'm still on episode 7 anyways and all ANBU so far - I have not watched any other group's release so far)

Are you watching CA's MP4, AVI or MKV release?

Central-Anime's mkvs are DVD-versions (up to episode 15 atm) while their avi(SD, 480p) and mp4(HD,720p) versions use DTV source. If we wait on those it'll be a while yet... Not to mention they're upscaled from the DVDs (1280x720) so doubt very much it'll get accepted here anyway...

No, because as I showed last page, the TV is real 720p. You can see differences outside of the lettering on blubart's comparison on the head.

The DVD is just an upscale.

I think we should take CA's 720p TV as HD B, Anbu's 540p TV as SD B, and CA's XviD as C.

that the release is anywhere near "real 720p" can only be an assumption. the difference could very well be introduced by the resizing algorithm itself - even if we were to upscale the original image and downscale it back to it's original resolution the chance is pretty good that you would still see the outline in a difference image. even Spline is far from lossless.

Can we test that?

Here are two shots from a known upscaled show, Seitokai no Ichizon. One is 1080->576p, the other is 1080->576->480->576. The difference should determine whether spline is a good indicator or not.

How about someone with the resources just compare CA's DVD and CA's 720p release. (I totally would post up the screenshots myself but my internet connection has been capped to 8KB/s and therefore it would take me ~2 days with nothing else to download the episodes)

I'm pretty sure that spline is a sharpening algotithm though. Basically the more that comes back, the less neutral spline is?

not the exact same frames but as close as i could get them with MPC. I like the HDTV release a lot better than the DVD release.

uff...this is sort of unrelated ...but since basically this is where bakabt compares subbers...

for someone who has watched anime enough to know when they are americanizing or making direct translations is there a real need to wait for anbu?...

if i had to choose id take japanese direct translations...and the best video quality...do i wait or can i start downloading this series?

Regarding best video quality, don't download the DVD version.

Either download ANBU's 540p or CA's 720p, and upscale the video to your monitior's native resolution appropriately.

but central-anime has always kept its reputation for old school anime...(LOGH..what a ride)

I'm not sure I want to get into the whole video quality debate, but you probably don't want SubSmith for your archive version. His releases are cross-translated from Chinese fansubs, and as someone who knows enough Japanese to be able to tell, the proportion of amusing "that's not what they said!" moments is generally at least 1 per episode. The benefit of watching SubSmith has mostly been release speed, as I generally just need some pointers from the subs in more complex dialogue situations, so the errors naturally induced by cross translation weren't as much of a problem for me. I definitely don't recommend it as an archive to people who don't know any Japanese though.

As a side note, if you liked SubSmith's encode the best and someone else's subs the best, it would be fairly simple to remux the softsubs.

no idea. your only choices are ANBU and CA. Both of whom usually do decent work.

i'm sure someone is already planning on doing so..if i were to do it,i'd have to download all the episodes and it would take awhile.

not sure...i think their getting rid of their avi files...the scarywater site is dead and i don't know if they are going to torrent it again.
