So-Ra-No-Wo-To
« on: December 25, 2009, 12:58:38 AM »

!!First watch the translated trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kolB8i7c7bk!!
And if you want, the commercial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doacLoWcxcw(worth it for Kalafina's music)

Plot summary:
The story of the anime is set in the future on a land that, after being devastated by long-lasting wars, has settled into quiet decline. Model and actress Juri Aikawa will play Kanata Kumika, a 15-year-old girl who fulfills her dream of enlisting in the army and joins a unit of five girls who protect a fortress. The girls also play music that reverberate across the skies over towns without people and seas without fish.

I had high hopes for this anime since back when I first saw the trailer and read the description - it instantly brought to my mind Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, a manga that I consider a true masterpiece. One of the many reasons for its greatness was the setting, and this is the thing that it shares with So-Ra-No-Wo-To. It's going to be directed by Mamoru Kanbe, who proved himself to me with Denpa Teki na Kanojo - though most of you will probably be more familiar with his work on Elfen Lied. Supervising the scripts will be Hiroyuki Yoshino, who will be probably best known for his work in the same position on Macross Frontier. Those two work wonders together, as illustrated by aforementioned series.
Add to that a pretty nice voice cast and opening song by Kalafina, and we have something really promising. Not to mention the general slice of life vibe, and, of course, yuri. Can't forget the yuri.
Now the controversial character designs, a.k.a. K-ON! rip offs - I don't like them too much, but I don't think they'll detract much from the enjoyment off the series. Designs in anime always changed to suit whatever was currently popular, and this is example of that.
So am I the only one that eagerly awaits this series? Or do you think it's going to be just another fluffy moeblob show not worth any attention(chances for this happening are rather slim, but I read opinions like that)?

I'm looking forward to it ^_^

Not too psyched about the K-On! Character designs (When I saw the pic posted for the first time, I thought, "Mugi, Yui, Azunya?  What is this? A K-On! Sequel?"

SOLD! Plot is interesting and the commercial looks great.
At first I actually thought that the K-On characters are going to war or something, boy was I wrong.

I don't think it's going to be another moeblob anime. I even believe that it can have some serious undertones and the two YT videos convince me even more that there is more to that show than many believe.

I knew nothing of the outside world. I was just a frog in a well.

After the first episode, it looks to be a pretty deep and fairly serious series. Totally a good thing.

Gotta go and buy the OP single when released. I also don't mind the K-On-Style... Wonder how many people'll be turned away by this?

Just a quick question...The one that looks like an Azunya clone, (black hair chibi) is it the same voice actor that does Shana from Shakugan no Shana? Soon she came on the screen that was the first thing that came to mind.

K-On! Trumpet Edition.
/facepalm
Seriously, that's like the tenth time someone tries to make the same joke on this forum alone. K-ON goes to war, K-ON trumpet edition... WE GET IT. IT LOOKS LIKE K-ON. I know that you just have to share your brilliant insight with us, but guess what - everybody noticed! So get over it already, will you ;)
Anyways, I read some opinions here and there, and hey, it seems my hopes weren't in vain - but I didn't watch it yet. Need to finish some things(like playing Persona 3... or playing Persona 3... and maybe even playing Persona 3) first and while I'm at it I somehow don't feel like watching anime  - but it's good to know I have something to look forward to.

Is it a trumpet really? I haven't seen the series yet but it looks like a bugle from most of the promo pictures.
The military uses a bugle which is operated similar to the trumpet but is quite different. As a brass nerd I just want to get a look at that mouthpiece she's blowing.

i'm pretty sure it's a bugle (missing valves, upset form).

Just saw the first episode, the first genuine masterpiece of 2010, and it's only week one!
Epic artwork, great fun - eagerly waiting for more.

Bugle desu.

Rie Kugimiya is not working on this project, so the answer would be no. Though the artwork would suggest she is a tsundere, the archetype that Rie usually fills.

Anyway, will watch this. Was only planning on watching DitVB this season, but this has definitely caught my eye.

So I decided to watch the first episode after all - and damn, does it feel good when something you looked forward to turns out better then expected.
Seriously, I love it. Utterly, completely, absolutely love it. Love the story, the characters, the music, the animation style(not the K-ON[well, Kannagi, really] faces, but the rough figures), the setting, and the cast.
Also, were I the only one who was 100% sure that Kanata is voiced by Kana Hanazawa after watching the episode but before reading the actual cast list?

If anything, it's not another K-ON! - it's another Aria.

EDIT: Oh, and the OP is ridiculously catchy for a Kalafina song - can't stop humming it.

Watched Ep 1 today.

I liked it a lot... (I knew I should have waited till it was completely over before I started watching it ^_^.  I hate waiting for new episodes!)
