That's a messed up trumpet, the bell region looks screwy and by the adjustable 3rd slide ring looks like a beginner, and the mouthpiece design is questionable. (Continues to ignore the plot of the story, only noticing the instruments.)

My goal is to completely disregard the plot and only point out any flaws they have with the trumpet....a petty goal indeed.

c'mon. . .dont pay attention to the minor details.

watch strawberry panic or ouran highschool host club, whenever they play piano.  . .seriously it looks like they are just banging on some random parts of the instrument and beautiful mozart comes out, or beethoven

IMO Nodame cantabile did a great job on synchronizing the actual movement of fingers with the sound. . .altough in some parts it may be off by just a little bit, but not enough to go like "ah comon thats just unreal"

GG dropped So-Ra-No-Wo-To because Crunchyroll is gonna sub it.
Fuck.
Not that their subs were that good on the first ep, but still, that's a bummer.

I don't think my premise is any worse than other criticism this show has  ;), I was trying to make fun of the people pointing out some other features.

So far it isn't too bad, it still sucks that GG dropped it, god they've been dropping shows left and right.

By the way, the main girl has a bugle, not a trumpet.

Rio-senpai, on the other hand, plays a trumpet.

Is 1st episode = 1st chapter?

I knew nothing of the outside world. I was just a frog in a well.

This season of anime is going to drive my anger to new levels. Between 'Dance in the Vampire Bund' by Shaft and 'Sora no Woto' I'm going to pull all my hair out (Bakemonogatari and K-On! having been two of my most hated anime of all time). For lack of anything better to watch I gave this a go.

Story isn't too bad so far. It does seem to be going somewhere and be a lot more serious than K-On! was. Unfortunately the Moe blob characters undermine the serious tone and don't fit the military theme at all. Secondly the whole 'joining military to learn music' thing is absolutely, gut wrenching, face-palm retarded. Rio quite obviously equals Mio with a different hair color :: and the main character even has the hair barrettes that Yui had. I'm trying my absolute best not to compare this with K-On!, but it's hard when everything looks exactly the same.

Anyways, not saying this is bad just yet, in fact I would say I liked it more than Dance in the Vampire Bund. I'll stick with it in hopes that I get used to some of the downsides. The CoalGG release was really well done, it's a shame to see that GG is dropping it.

So apparently you missed those tanks, uniforms, officers, rankings, fortresses, soldiers, privates, buglers, and the fact that in the anidb description it states the land is in war and the girls fulfill their dreams of enlisting in the military. Did I miss anything here?

EDIT: Oh, and anidb has Military listed in the categories.

Well, the trailer did seem a bit more serious, hinting darker themes, but yeah, I agree, if it comes down this path it might be hard to swallow with cute moecharacters. Then again, judging from first episode I'd say it won't be especially dark. Probably another slice-of-life anime with an unusual setting, and small dramatic moments on the way.

Most likely won't be bad, but too early to say how good it can turn.

Anyone know why it's transcripted woto instead of oto? Some kind of wordplay? Or is it a spoiler to reveal it?

Because technically in ramaji 'ヲ' is translated as 'wo' not 'o' despite the fact that the 'w' is silent. If they wanted it to be Sora no Oto it would be written as this: 'ソラノオト’

My first impressions with the name was taking it kinda as a word play.

I don't know what to call it  (Note sounds I guess...)

but I compared it to

Do-Re-Me-Fa-So-La-Ti-Do

Ah I do believe you are correct. I was just looking at it from a purely technical translation point, but Oto is the actual meaning they were looking for.

I was half-joking, but w/e.
No, really, this isn't a show about soldiers - it's a show about a world where the war ended and soldiers are not needed anymore, and where the only important role they play now is to be keepers of tradition - at least that's what I got from it so far.
Oh, of course there is a military theme but it's obviously not the point of the show. It's not a show about, war, fighting or killing, so saying that moeblob characters don't fit because of it is just plain silly. And anyways, if you think cute characters somehow detract from serious themes, what are you doing watching anime?
Now, about the "joining the military to learn music" - it makes just enough sense to me, considering the setting, and what we know about Kanata. If the war was long-lasting, then the soldiers and military were probably glorified. For the kids they were the heroes, and now that the war is over(or just de-escalated to the point seen in the show) having the desire to join the military is understandable. And playing music? Well, if that's what she can be useful at, then why not? Makes as much sense as someone with an affinity for engineering joining the military to become a mechanic.
