Not quoting to save space
@Erious: You go to your local military office right now and tell them you want to volunteer for the military to learn music. Then watch them laugh and send you off for psychological examining. The same as joining military to be an engineer? You have no idea what the military is do you. You see, the military actually needs engineers. They work on computers, electrical equipment, vehicles, and much, much more. Joining to be a mathematician, an engineer, a mechanic, a programmer, etc. is a valid reason because they actually have a place in military. Unless your French and play drums while marching into war you will not see music in use in military aside from the occasional wake up trumpet (which has been replaced by much more annoying things). She already stated she was a 'volunteer' for the military meaning she isn't getting schooling for joining, so getting musical training or being in the military school band isn't a possibility. Thus putting the last nail in the coffin.

The Rio = Mio comment was based only on looks and the fact that both characters have pretty much the same design.

You're defending this show an awful lot for having seen only one episode. Like I said before, these were just my first impressions and they will probably change/be explained as the series goes on.

The military wouldn't turn anyone looking to enlist away unless he (or she) had some sort of physical deformity. At least not in the US.

Or psychological problems. Everyone is required to pass physical and mental tests before they are allowed to join and most members have to pass psychological exams after they are discharged as well (especially if killing was involved).

Except I didn't attack it ::)
I said some good things and some bad things, and said I would continue watching. This is the reason I hated K-On...the ridiculous fan-girls that think every tiny negative about the show is absolute blasphemy.

Pretty much every army in the world has a military band or orchestra(don't know what the proper english term would be) - of course they don't play music in the field anymore, but they nonetheless are pretty common thing. Therefore playing music in the military is nothing to facepalm at - now, whether she could just join without any previous schooling, or the what role does music play in the military(or even more so, what role does the unit stationed at the fortress play) is a matter of setting, not logic. And the setting is already a mix of various cultures(yes, including French), so I really don't think small unit stationing in a historical fortress and playing ceremonial music is that stupid.
You're attacking this show an awful lot for having seen only one episode.
Well, at least his not attacking this show after seeing only one image as a lot of people tend to do - so I can't blame him for that.

@Erious: If I am not mistaken, isn't the military band specifically an extra curricular thing for military school only? More specifically those passing the correct exams to enlist in the army and be given almost free college tuition to ARMY, NAVY, AIRFORCE, etc. universities? If she volunteered then she wouldn't be enrolled in any military schools where the band is taught, practices, and plays.

There's a very, very long history of young boys joining the military during peacetime to be musicians.  They also did lots of other things like cleaning, cooking, running errands, performing fellatio and accepting cock up the ass.

You're associating the way in which the modern American military functions with the way every other military throughout history has operated.  Most countries have many units within their militaries which exist solely for ceremonial purposes.  So does the US, but it's far less common here due to the lack of any sort of history or tradition.

Finally someone with some facts to back up an argument. Thank you sir. You have swayed my opinion. I still think it's crazy to join military to learn music, but it doesn't seem so completely ridiculous anymore.

Them or Fubuki (who will take over where Hatsuyuki left of off and will probably re-release the first episode for consistency).
