More specifically those passing the correct exams to enlist in the army and be given almost free college tuition to ARMY, NAVY, AIRFORCE, etc. universities? There's a very, very long history of young boys joining the military during peacetime to be musicians.  They also did lots of other things like cleaning, cooking, running errands, performing fellatio and accepting cock up the ass.

You're associating the way in which the modern American military functions with the way every other military throughout history has operated.  Most countries have many units within their militaries which exist solely for ceremonial purposes.  So does the US, but it's far less common here due to the lack of any sort of history or tradition.

Finally someone with some facts to back up an argument. Thank you sir. You have swayed my opinion. I still think it's crazy to join military to learn music, but it doesn't seem so completely ridiculous anymore.
