Recommend me an Anime Please
« on: December 25, 2009, 02:51:13 AM »
Ive been looking for a good anime for quite a while and im at a loss. My top 5 animes i liked the most were:
1. Kenshin OVA (Sick action and intense story)
2. Hajime No Ippo (Epic battles and hilarious comedy)
3. Full Metal Alchemist (Even balance of plot and fights with enough emotions to make it great)
4. School Rumble (Harima X Eri. No more need to be said.)
5. Slam Dunk (Basketball and Sakuragi. Hilarious Comedy with intense games even though they did drag alot of em out)

Animes i didnt like :
1 Bakurano (Plot was confusing and didnt really appeal to me)
2. Ef - A Tales of Memories (It had its good points and i forced myself to finish it and ended up worse from it, i think. Storyline was vague and confusing with nothing really leaving me glad i chose this anime. Sorry i cant be more specific why i dont like it.)
3. Zetsubou Sensei. Still dont really find it really that funny at all and had alot of meaningless writing i had to keep up to read. It seemed like the author was on crack when he made it since most of the plot didnt make any sense at all (Is that the joke?) with jokes that you had to be Japanese or something to understand. Not saying Japapnese people are on crack, but it felt like it had alot of cultural jokes i didnt understand.

Id like to watch something along the lines of Hajime No Ippo, School Rumble, and Slam Dunk. Doesnt have to be fights/sports, but preferably something funny and romantic with little bits of action to make me want to watch it.

Anime ive already watched:
AnimenewsNetwork has their best top 50 list by rating and ive watched 99% of it (link = http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/ratings-anime.php?top50=best_bayesian).  Also watched thats not on the list, Midori No Hibi, K-On, Da Capo, Lucky Star, Natsume Yuujincho, Hangun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora, Macross Frontier, Evangelion, FLCL, Samurai Champloo, Chobits, Fruits Basket, Ouran host Club, Hellsing, Ghost in the Shell, Love Hina, Inuyasha, Air, Last Exile, Haibane Renmei, Escaflowne, Eureka Seven, Berserk, and GTO.

Thanks in advance for reading my post and im sorry you had to read so much.

Sword of the Stranger is a somewhat typical, yet awesomely presented, samurai flick (super awesome action and it's a MOVIE!).

Your top 5 is ALL shounen, so... in case you haven't seen it:

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (it is a parody, so watching Evangelion and FLCL first will help to understand the parodical elements, but it really isn't necessary). Full Metal Alchemist is like a crappy emo-fest compared to this. Though, episode 4-6 is a joke- tough it out and you will not regret it!

Baccano! Is awesomely entertaining. Watch the dub, the localization is superior to the subtitles. The subtitles pretty much really suck.

Souten Kouro has NOT finished being subbed, but it is loosely based upon the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which is perhaps the best historical novel ever. You can find episodes 1-12 on Tokyo Toshokan (just google it, they're moving servers over the holidays though)-- It's not necessarily good, but in terms of shounen badassery, it's very entertaining. Sticklers for ROTK will complain about Souten's accuracy, but... TBH, all the stories about the characters from ROTK are ultimately fiction to begin with, and Souten, while largely mythological in its presentation, is really pretty good.
clandestine inanity, that's called spinsanity.

^+1 to all these.

I will add Soul Eater. Plot degrades after mid-point but definitely some great fights and a good story set up.

You should definitely watch Hungry Heart: Wild Striker; it's kinda like Slam Dunk.

Agree completely with this one since it does appear that you enjoy sports themed shows. To compliment that I would also throw in Cross Game and the first 3 seasons of Major. Season 4 and 5 were just repetitious to me. Also Taishou Yakyuu Musume. Hmm...just realized that japan is really big on the baseball animes.

Anyway, moving on, I would also like to suggest: (the bolded ones I would suggest to watch asap.  ;D )

Hikaru no Go - This show was so well-made that I wanted to play a game that looks and actually IS boring as hell.
Black Lagoon - Just because if I met Revy in real life, I would divorce my wife and become her obedient errand boy.
Detroit Metal City - Hilariousness and insanity all wrapped up into short episodes. I loved every short minute of it.
Toradora - Funny slice of life and I fell in love with Taiga. (from a cheering on point of view)
BECK - I loved this show because it blends nicely typical characters with an a-typical anime plot.
Princess Mononoke - In my opinion this is the best anime movie ever produced and offered to the western market.
Full Metal Panic
Serial Experiments Lain
Maison Ikkoku - I just love this one and have watched it maybe three dozen times over the years.
Vandread - Love the characters
Initial D - Same as above but also loved the pacing and actual action of the races.

Thanks for all the replies! Oh, and Merry Christmas to everyone too! Ill definitely check out Sword of the Stranger, Maison Ikkoku, Detroit Metal City, and Hungry Heart. Good thing there's freeleech going on cuz i have alot of downloading to do. Oh, and funny thing is i mispelled Baccano! to Bakurano. Sorry for all the confusion. Oh, and Souten Kouro looks interesting too since there alot of references to the Three Kingdoms in mangas/animes. Thanks again for all the input!
