MeGUI and cutting video
« on: December 27, 2009, 07:24:36 PM »
Hi!

I have several DVDs to encode and I've been using MeWiki to see how to do it. Everything's fine except that the DVDs have one large video for all episodes (~2:05 hours for 5 episodes). How do I cut them? Before encoding, while encoding, after...? And how can the subs be cut with the video too? That part isn't covered in MeWiki. I tried Doom9 but found nothing and I can't ask either. So I have the kind people of this forum left :)

Thanks ^^

What does "[sic]" mean? I don't think anyone got sick in the article so why is it in there? Should I start writing and post "[dump]" when I leave to go take a shit then return?

If the DVDs have chapters... Use a DVD ripping software, select which chapters & tracks (audio, subs) to rip...

If not, then rip the complete (with selected tracks & subs) and use a tool like DGindex and cut the episodes one by one.

You should try out DVD Fab. It's relatively easy to use when you select tracks what you want to rip. I'm not sure of your DVD source - is there separately marked tracks for episodes. If its all in "one stick", you have no other choice than rip the DVD in one large file, encode it to what you prefer, and split the episodes eg. with Easy Video Spitter, virtualdub mod or other similar software which does the job as direct-stream-copy without new re-encoding.

Edit: or just encode the tracks separately from ripped RAW's.

There's this AviSynth function called Trim(). I wonder what it does?

That's for cutting before encoding, by the way. It doesn't matter where you do it, though. If you want to do it afterwards, you can just use mkvmerge's split by timecodes and use chapterpoints for splitting the episodes, but at least I do all my cutting before encoding.
