You need to see it ;)
The fact that they are already dead and therefore can't die is the basis of the slapstick comedy that makes up half the show.
(click to show/hide)Jun Maeda himself, however, has stated that he thinks he has successfully created another emotionally intensive anime, so I do expect that something will happen later on that changes the mood from comedy to tragedy, just like every other Key title.

They have at least begun to discuss a possible mechanism for being "killed" in the afterlife, though... It's this "erasure" thing. It sounds more like reincarnation, though, so I'm not yet sure where this is going.

Shit, if he stated it like that I guess no chance the drama will be less forced this time, eh?
*sigh* It's not like I don't like it, but it's getting tiresome. Especially since lately there's a bit too much people acting like Key's plots, which rely on cheaply manipulating readers/viewers emotions, are some kind of literary masterpieces.
It's okay to enjoy it, I know I certainly do, but a lot of people ignore the obvious shortcomings and act like, say, Clannad, is the best thing ever written by mankind.

Ah, guess I had to vent, feel free to ignore my little rant.

Here's what I'd say about the whole "Key as masterpiece vs Key as repetitive" debate: Key's works are most certainly formulaic, but at the same time, quite enjoyable. When someone praises Clannad as a literary masterpiece, it is very much like proclaiming "This Big Mac is the greatest hamburger of all time!" The greatest Key work is something like the greatest Model-T Henry Ford ever made.

Originality only matters in art and in novelty, I'd say. The main complaint that can be made against unoriginal works is that they are boring, because we've seen it before. Key works might not be original, but they don't bore their fans, so their fans are well deserved.

Of course, what am I (and, I think, many others) looking for when I watch a Key production? I am indeed looking for that cheap emotional manipulation, and I don't care if it isn't Shakespeare (although, Shakespeare might actually be a good analogue for Key...). I want to be emotionally stimulated, and if that means getting toyed around with by recycled plots and characters, so be it. If Key had only ever participated in one animated work, I'd just be rewatching it over and over again anyway. In the worst case scenario, watching all the Key productions just means rewatching your favorite of the bunch with a few modifications to make it more interesting.

In any case, though, I think Angel Beats is obviously going to break the Air/Kanon/Clannad mold. It's no longer Kyoto Animation, and it's a totally different premise, as far as I can tell. For heaven's sake, it isn't even a clear harem yet! I'm sure we will see plenty of recycled elements, whether comedic (such as we have already seen with the hit-counter scene), or dramatic (as we have not seen yet here, but which we have seen many times before in Key's stories), but overall, these common elements are going to be necessarily forced into a different context with Angel Beats, so I think the overall effect might seem a little more unique than previous works.

I just feel like talking about Angel Beats today, so I'm gonna keep replying to posts in this thread... Don't think I'm trying to start an argument here or anything.
