I usually try to stick to the "realistic" art style (Think Cowboy Bebop / Ghost in the Shell / Black Lagoon).  You know... the one without things out of the ordinary.

5cm Per Second has some of my favorite art though.

Bah... what's the point of drawing it if it isn't to take advantage of the medium? Hypocritically, Sword of the Stranger and Seirei Moribito has some of my favorite artwork. Very nice water color backgrounds, very limited CG.

Kakurenbo was also pretty sweet.
clandestine inanity, that's called spinsanity.

Whats to say that because the characters are pretty ordinary looking you're not taking advantage of the medium?

Ok, apparently my internet crapped out on me when I posted this.

I pretty much said that I dislike when animes end up doing stuff like this...

I may have not explained it very well

(Though saying this is the only way anime can take advantage of their medium is doing stuff like this is pretty ignorant.  Ghost in the Shell and Ergo Proxy both do awesome jobs with their art styles and would fall in my "realistic" category)

I really, really liked the way the backgrounds for Ponyo were done. They have a seemingly simple, crayony look, but are very rich in mood.

Not to deny that I do also like the character designs in Ponyo, I was talking about the film's backgrounds with reference to the topic at hand.

Disgusted would be my discription. Like, WTF are you doing!?

Anyway, sometimes those fit, so I dont mid them to much when they do. However, If they had tried that in ergo proxy I would have deleted the anime.

I dont like thet character style, but the backgrounds are really good.
