Question with analog stereo output
« on: January 08, 2010, 02:53:50 AM »
I recently ordered this cable that allows the PS3/Xbox360 (running HDMI) and the Wii to connect to a computer monitor via VGA. As you can see from the image below, the cable runs audio by analog stereo in which I do not have any speakers using these ports. The speakers I have for my computer is connected via USB, and I am also using the onboard sound card for the microphone. My question is, what method of connection would you recommend me use to get sound (possibly without having to purchase anything / not too pricey if needed)?

RCA to 3.5mm

RCA extender

Look on Amazon for some cheap third party seller and you get any cable for around $3-4 or less after shipping.

Do not lug this into a microphone port, you need to use a Line-In port. The microphone port is designed for electret microphones, so it:
1. is very sensitive, so the normal line level signal will overdrive it,
2. is mono,
3. outputs +5V DC on one of the "channels". Electret microphones need this, but you can fry the output of your device by giving it those 5V.

If your sound card does not have a line input then you can use your Hi-Fi amplifier or whatever (if you have such a system).

Your microphone jack is outdated, time to upgrade. My line-in and mic use the same jack.

Yeah, good luck getting line-in from the console and using the mic at the same time with a combined line-in/mic jack... >_> there's a reason high-end sound cards still have them on separate jacks.

The motherboard I have is the EVGA 780i which has separate microphone and line-in jacks. I received the PS3 VGA cable and it works on the monitor I have, just haven't been able to get audio from my comp yet. The comp recognized that the line-in was connected and it was receiving audio, just not sending it to the speakers so I'll need to do some more research on it.

Actually, my sound card has a combined line-in/microphone jack, but it is labeled as such.  However, if I buy another sound card, I'll look for one that has separate jacks, because something failed in my current card so it outputs +4V when in line-in mode and +5V when in microphone mode. I had to insert two capacitors in series with the inputs so I don't break my audio equipment.

The thing I love about my Mac is the combined microphone/line in/optical in port.

Because I don't have a TV and unable to afford a nice new monitor, so the cheapest way to get use out of my ps3 would be to grab a cheap vga cable.

Well there's lots of reason why 1 could have a console without a TV:

1) TV stolen
2) Inherited console from friend/family member
3) Stole console
4) Won console from contest (I actually won a normal Xbox when they first came out from Taco Bell)
5) TV died

Though my reason happens to be that the TV died (15 yr old 19" Magnavox).
