Yes, but he got playing issues on linux, and from my experience there nothing needed to play anything on linux thanks to mplayer, so i was thinking he is using othere player than mplayer :)
MPlayer is powerfull so he can tweak it abit and try :)
edit: and from what i readed now coreavc aint native for linux, you need wine to install it, and it will be allways slower than native application/codec ;)

You need to read a bit more, using the CoreAVC library in Mplayer has nothing to do with wine.
Mplayer is a fine program but overall you need more cpu horsepower to do the same thing in ubuntu/mplayer than Windows/MPC

GRUB probably just replaced the MBR on your internal HDD. What GRUB does is it uses the file /boot/grub/menu.lst from your linux partition to give you a list of operating systems to boot from. If you deleted/removed your linux partition, suddenly the OS list is unavailable. Easiest way to recover the MBR is to use the recovery console from a Windows cd/floppy to restore the MBR.
As for removing your linux partition, use GParted (it comes with most ubuntu live cds) to remove the linux partition and grow your storage partition.

Unlike Windows, Linux allows for portability, meaning that you can install Linux onto an external (or a flash drive), stick it into another computer that supports booting from USB devices, and boot your OS.
Or something like that. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Is there another way to get the window cd without calling the company for it?

If you only need the disk, you can download an ISO from your favorite site. I'm assuming you're going to use it to fix the mbr ONLY and not for installation. However, if you're going to use it for installation as well, assuming you have a legit key, look for the official MD5/SHA sum for the specific version you want to download and check the ISO you got. This can act as a guarantee that the ISO you download in unmodified by someone with malicious intent.
Microsoft wont kill you for downloading the disc.
