Probably give another episode or two a try, don't see this going into a dark end though, not that I wouldn't want it or anything. :P

I'm a big Gainax fan, so I'll probably check out an episode or two eventually.

I won't discourage anyone from seeing it, but you have to be an Ichigo Mashimaro or Yotsuba&! fan to like this type of show.
If you hated either of those, this definitely isn't the show for you.
Just want to set the proper expectations. This isn't your normal Gainax show.
