How do you all convert you Anime to DVD?
« on: January 14, 2010, 12:57:55 AM »
Hope this belongs here, was contemplating the anime board but settled for here.

The main reason I inquire is I'm curious about subtitles.

I use TMPGEnc Pro to convert than DVD Lab Pro to make the actual DVD, or just use Convert X To DVD 4 for formats other than avi. Both programs (dvdlab pro and Convert x) make their own subtitles from the subs that come with the files, and they're quite ugly compared to the subs that come with the anime. Leaves me wondering if this is the route others go, or if they use a superior program that handles subs in a much better way?

Another thing is dvd medium, is it common to try and fit 8-9 episodes on a DL dvd? Or do most people just watch these on their computers and not bother converting them to be watched on a dvd player?

Try the program DeVeDe, a friend of mine recommended it. It looks like it would work decently well.
Do we exist? Can you prove that we exist.

I will give anyone major cookies if they know where that line came from.

More and more watches them on HDTV connected to a PC (technically that's watching on the comp, but not sitting at a desk). I myself gave up on storing "stuff" on DVD a couple of years ago, since HDDs are so cheap these days and are more convenient.

You could try re-encoding the videos files first to harcode all the subtitles, if the original subs are softsubs. That would guarantee that you'd get the same formats once you encode to DVD. I'm guessing that your subs are getting messed up because the DVD format can't handle text softsubs, so the programs convert the subs into something that the mpeg2/DVD format can handle.

Got any old fansubs on HDD/DVD/CD? Please take a look at this thread.

Yea, something like that, but I only burn the stuff I can get in Dual Audio which I think might pose a problem to that solution.

Reviving this as I would also like to know if anyone has a better solution. I usually watch stuff on my computer but I wanted to burn Clannad to DVD to watch it with someone else. So far all I've tried is convertXtoDVD, but like Ultron said the subs come out pretty generic and ugly and I have to make all my own chapters, even though the mkv already had them. If anyone has any solutions let me know, otherwise I guess I'll look into re-encoding like Zalis suggested.

My old solution (before windows 7)

-AlltoAvi ---- then ConvertXtoDVD

worked wonders!

My new solution (with windows 7)

NOTHING!
NADA!

whenever I use alltoavi the subtitles come out so SOOO sOoOOOO small They're not readable in a TV screen.  (unless i like pause and get really close which annoys me)
ConverXtoDVD still works wonders. . . all other formats (xcept mkv and ogg) are converted beautifully into a DvD

I've been using ConvertXtoDVD more and more lately, though the subs are still on the ugly side, its a fair trade for how much the program can cram onto a single 4GB DVD. 13  episodes, and its the same quality as if you only did 4 or 5 with DVD Lab Pro or ConvertXtoDVD. Least it looks the same to me. Menus are really ugly as well.... lots of uglyness with this program come to think of it... yet so much good.

ConvertXtoDVD is hardly the be all end all. It has many limitations with the way it handles subtitles, converts certain aspect ratios and its menu creation or its lack of (it IS really lacking), at least from the GUI. Heard you could do more if you mess with the code or config files, but who really wants to do that?

So I remain hopeful that someone out there knows of something better. Conversion wise.
