Sky Crawlers - Movie

I usually dont watch many anime movies that are unrelated to shows i enjoy. I dont remember how but i ended up downloading this after reading the description.

Wondering if anyone else saw this amazingly well done piece. The bluray quality on it was fucking amazing. And the animating in it was fantastic looking. If the planes were real designs you could swear they were filmed until you see an anime character flying it.

Story itself was a bit slow but interesting, the characters themselves were limited in their development but given the situation by the end of the movie its completely understood as to why.

I work at sears and the sony tv's were advertising it so I downloaded it
well. . .compared to the trailer at sears it was dissapointing
why?
well because i was expecting a lot more action. . .

I found i had to watch it twice to really come to enjoy the whole story  :'(  I guess im just not quick to catch on to things!

Your typical Mamoru Oshii movie. 2 hours of political dialogs and 5 minutes of cool action
You will find that most of his movies are setup like that, other typical examples include Patlabor 1 and 2 and the 2 live action movies from the Kerberos Saga "Red spectacles" and "Stray Dog".

I was kind of dissapointed with Patlabor movies,  vs the show.

I don't remember which one it was I rented, but it was when I was in my teens..  So a long time ago.  The only thing I remember is my dad being able to identify a plane in one scene by its shadow on the water..   And later some standoff scene or whatever  where it started snowing.   It was nicely done for its time,  but that's all I can remember.

So I must have found it pretty boring

Sky Crawlers is indeed one of the best anime movies I've seen, but my personal favorites still lie with 5cm per second and Beyond the Clouds Lies the Promise Land.


As I recall though, it didn't really develop characters through dialogue, and there were only like 10 pages of actual lines for the characters.. haha

I would say it would account for a normal anime until you realize that the war between Europe and US is solely for entertainment and amusement of humankind. Kildren are manufactured humans and used in these wars as they are totally dispensable (which the teacher is totally against and choose to change sides) and replaced as they are KIA.

There are simple clues, like the reaction of old lady in the plane crash site - treating the pilot as if not human - , the tv screen in the bar diner during the war between the EU and US showing stats as if it is just a match of some sort and various others.

They all look familiar because there are only a handful different types models of kildren and they can not recognize each other just by the looks.

I was horrified really that this could indeed be possible in the next 100 years, and it reminded me of possible advances in cloning humans.

I had similar feelings when I watched the movie Moon (2009) where a guy makes a 3 year contract for working on the moon for harnessing energy.

No wonder we humans are the most dangerous creatures of all.

I liked how they had the people who started to realize exactly what it was and how there was a limited number of different kildren that the one girl thought she was going crazy and then the guy with the newspaper who was dead more or less shows up again with a new name. Exact same OCD habit of folding the paper. The same guy flying in after the credits for the end.

The action that was in it was simply astonishingly well made
Like i said above if the planes were real models instead of imaginary you could definitely have mistaken it for film

As has been mentioned, I found the way that they handled the pilots interesting. They are dehumanized by the "adults" and near the end we see how at least three of them had developed mental problems as a result. Jinroh was in a haze, the girl he talked too seemed to have a mild psychosis (probably directly resulting from the anxiety and depression associated with the knowledge she possessed), and the creepy-eyes base commander had destructive tendencies.

The actions scenes were beautiful, albeit short and sparse.

Also, whats with her daughter? I don't doubt that Kusanagi's supposed daughter was indeed geneticly related. They both have those creepy eyes. However, was that a kildren, another one of her, or did she give birth? At times it sounded like The Teacher was the father and other times Jinroh or one like him, was the father. I figured someone who may have read the novels may know.

I just watched the movie again and remembered some of the remarkable moments I forgot (last watched ~1 year ago, iirc) as well as some new clues I had not noticed before.

Definitely had a high replay value for me, fascinating op song from Kawaii Kenji (yet again)

I loved this movie. The story was symbolic and complex, and the soundtrack was one of the best I have ever heard.
