R1 and R2 Anime Questions

<< < (5/5)

Xemnarth:
Yeah I've noticed too that some R1 releases keep Kanji in credits, but not as frequent. The rule is usually English credits in R1 DVDs.

-I would also like to know if there is a difference in terms of video/audio quality and censorship between R1 and R2 releases.
-Does R2 DVD always predate R1 DVD?
-I understand that R2 releases are totally unsubbed but noticed that some HKDVD releases have subs. What is the difference between HKDVD and R2 DVD?

Thanks again for the clarification.

Zalis116:
A/V Quality differences: R2 are usually better, but it's not hard to have higher quality when you're only putting 1-3 eps on a disc and charging twice as much as what the 4-7 ep R1 discs cost.

Censorship: No difference on non-hentai titles. Well, there are a few very rare cases (mostly 8-10 years ago) where the R1 licensee wound up with broadcast versions instead of home video versions. Even that, that's a case of materials mixup and not active/deliberate censoring by the R1 companies.

(There are some R1DVDs marked as edited, but only for shows that had TV broadcasts. Even many of those also had uncut releases.)

With a few exceptions, R2 predates R1. In fact, Japanese companies have been reluctant to let shows be released in R1 if they don't have an R2 DVD (or Blu-Ray) release first, due to reverse importation fears. That's why the original Mobile Suit Gundam was released dub-only, because they didn't want Japanese fans to import R1s before the R2s were out.

R2J DVDs = legitimate product, usually no subs.
HKDVDs = nearly always pirated bootlegs, using fansubs, R1-subs, or jpn -> chi -> eng machine translations.
